He Guaranteed Her Loan, I Filed for Divorce the Same Day Chapter 05

Darien’s hand clamped hard around my wrist. Veins bulged on his forehead.
“Do you even act like a mother anymore? Are you just going to stand by and watch our son destroy himself?”
I shoved his hand away. My words came sharp and deliberate.
“He is not only my child. It’s your turn to parent him for once.”
The words had barely left my mouth when Lorelei screamed.
Her legs buckled, and she collapsed weakly into Darien’s embrace.
“The hospital just messaged. If we don’t pay, they’ll throw my daughter out…”
Darien’s face turned ashen. He roared at me.
“Transfer that twelve-thousand from our account to Lorelei this second. I’m going to sign
that guaranty loan.”
Lorelei dropped to her knees right in front of me, bowing her head toward the floor.
“Please, I beg you. Save my child! I will pay you back. Darien’s settlement money will come any
day now…
She latched tight onto the hem of my pants. I stepped backward.
Lorelei shrieked and tumbled to the ground as if I had kicked her. Her elbow scraped raw
against the floor.
Rage flooded Darien’s eyes. He slapped me hard across the face.
“Elowen, you have everything. She has nothing. All she has left is her child. Why do you keep tormenting her?”
My cheek burned numb. I tasted metallic blood inside my mouth.
Kai rammed his whole body against my stomach.
“If
you
I stumbled backward, pulled the Marital Settlement Agreement out of my handbag.
“Sign the divorce papers, and I’ll transfer the money.”
Darien’s chest heaved violently.
He snatched the document, scrawled his signature hard across the page, and threw it straight
at me.
“Happy now?”
Pages scattered all over the floor. I bent to gather them.
“Let’s head to County Family Court right now.”
We signed our paperwork at the court building, and Darien spun on his heel and stormed
outside.
I followed him over to the lending office. The guaranty documents lay spread-open across the
desk.
I pulled out my phone and started recording video.
“Write this by hand: This debt is Darien Hale’s sole personal obligation. It carries no liability for his spouse Elowen Voss. Sign and add your fingerprint.”
Darien lifted his head, eyes bloodshot.
“We just filed for divorce.”
“We’re still in the mandatory waiting period,” I replied calmly.
“Write it clearly. I’m recording audio and video the entire time.”
He hesitated, his voice low and menacing.
“Elowen, do you really need to draw every single line this sharp?”
“Yes.”
He held my gaze for a long moment. His pen bit deep into the paper, ink almost tearing through the sheet as he wrote.
“You’re going to regret this.”
A heavy weight lifted off my chest.
I transferred six thousand dollars-half of our twelve-thousand-dollar marital savings-to
his account.
“The house and vehicles are your separate pre-marital property, you keep them. I waive my claim to the share of the property’s value that was built during our marriage through joint mortgage payments. Kai’s physical custody goes to you. I will make regular, timely child-support payments.”
I turned and walked away without another backward glance.
I rented a small studio apartment close to my workplace.
That same night, Lorelei made a post on her social-media feed.
The photo showed her sitting at the dinner table with Darien and Kai, home-cooked meal spread before them. It looked exactly like a happy little family unit.
[For so many years, Darien and this sweet boy have never known real domestic warmth. Even a simple home-cooked dinner moves them to tears. My heart aches for them.]
The top comment was hers: [Little Kai keeps calling me Mom no matter how hard I try to stop
him.]
I stared at the screen. I thought of eight years of coming home from work, cooking, cleaning, taking care of every household chore.
None of that had counted as real family warmth to them. Only the meals Lorelei made qualified
for that title.
Word spread fast among our mutual friends and relatives about Darien signing a guaranty for his dead friend’s wife and kid.
Everyone praised him for his kindness and noble character.
Whenever my name came up, people fell silent.
“She’s just a woman with a narrow perspective.”
I paid no mind to the gossip. The month-long mandatory waiting period slipped by quickly.
