Before the forensic team arrived, the hospital made another move.

The head nurse walked over with a tray and told me I needed an antibiotic injection.

I glanced at the IV bag.

The label looked like it had been attached afterward.

My mother immediately stopped her.

“Put the medication down first. We’ll wait until the police verify it.”

The head nurse’s expression shifted unnaturally.

“Ms. Whitmore just had surgery. Without this medication, she could develop an infection.”

My mother looked at her.

“We won’t refuse legitimate medical orders. But don’t put anything into my daughter’s veins that doesn’t have

a record.”

Detective Foster ordered her team to check the hospital’s medical system.

The medication had no corresponding prescription record.

The head nurse’s face turned pale.

She claimed she had “grabbed the wrong medication.”

I couldn’t even laugh.

That wasn’t a mistake.

They were still trying to keep me unconscious, or worse, make everyone believe I was an unstable woman

who couldn’t even speak for herself.

The forensic technicians finally arrived.

The DNA collection kits were opened on-site under official supervision.

First was me.

Then Evelyn.

Then the deceased infant.

Finally, the baby girl inside the neonatal transport incubator.

Evelyn clung tightly to the incubator, refusing to let go.

She cried so hard she could barely breathe.

“Ethan, say something! They’re trying to take my baby away.”

Ethan clenched his fists.

After a long silence, he finally spoke.

“Just cooperate. This will be over soon.”

Evelyn stared at him in disbelief.

In that moment, I understood.

He hadn’t suddenly grown a conscience.

He was taking a gamble.

He knew both children’s father was him.

If they only tested paternal DNA, he truly had nothing to worry about.

After the samples were collected, Detective Foster had them sent away.

Even expedited testing would take time.

I sat on a chair in the hallway, a dull numb pain spreading through my abdomen.

My daughter was right there, inside the incubator.

Yet she was under the supervision of the police and nurses, and I still wasn’t allowed to hold her.

She was my child.

But I still needed a piece of paper to prove it.

Ethan walked over to me. He crouched down and softened his voice.

“Clara, if it turns out you were wrong in the end, you’re going to break down.”

I looked at him. “Are you afraid I’ll break down, or are you afraid I won’t?”

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

Those words made me feel sick. I stared at him.

“Then who did you want to hurt? Her?”

I pointed toward the neonatal transport incubator.

“Or the deceased infant?”

His throat moved.

At that moment, one of Detective Foster’s officers came out of Dr. Lane’s office.

He was carrying several items.

Unused DNA evidence seals. Two blank neonatal transfer forms.

A folder labeled:

“Evelyn Hart Mother and Infant Transfer.”

And a USB drive with signs of previous use.

Dr. Lane’s face turned pale.

“These are just backup materials we keep for work.”

Detective Foster opened the folder. Her eyes stopped on one line.

“To ensure that once the baby leaves the hospital, no independent third-party identity verification can be

performed.”

When she read those words aloud, the entire hallway fell silent.

Evelyn suddenly looked up.

“That wasn’t written by me!”

I looked at her. “If you didn’t write it, then who signed the name Evelyn Hart?”

All color drained from her face.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Evelyn, stop talking.”

It was already too late.

The panic on her face explained more than any words could.

But the final results still hadn’t come back.

They hadn’t completely lost yet.

And I hadn’t won yet.

Suddenly, my daughter started crying inside the incubator.

I stood up instinctively.

But the nurse stopped me.
