He Gave My Daughter to His Ex, So I Destroyed His Perfect Life Chapter 01

The nurse placed my baby against my chest for skin-to-skin contact.

There was a faint trace of fragrance behind her ear.

It was the scent passed down through every woman in the Whitmore family.

Thankfully, my daughter had it too.

Ethan reached out. “Let me hold her.”

I shifted away, avoiding his hand.

His hand froze in midair.

“Clara?”

I didn’t look at him. My eyes stayed on the nurse.

“All of her examinations will be done in this room. Bring whatever equipment you need here. If something can’t be moved, we’ll postpone that test for now.”

The nurse hesitated. “Ms. Whitmore, routine newborn screenings need to be completed in the newborn nursery.”

“I said she doesn’t leave my sight.”

Ethan frowned.

“Clara, you just gave birth. Don’t make this harder on yourself.”

“ St. Claire Medical Center is the best hospital in the city. My family has shares here. Nothing is going to happen.”

The stream of comments slowly appeared before my eyes.

【This is exactly how he’s trying to make you lower your guard.】

【Don’t trust him.】

I gently patted my daughter’s back.

“I’m not refusing medical care. I’m refusing to let anyone take her away.”

Shortly after, Dr. Miranda Lane, the head of the Neonatal Unit, walked in. She wore gold-rimmed glasses, and her voice remained calm.

“Ms. Whitmore, your baby was just born. We recommend completing the routine newborn screenings as soon as possible. ”

“We can arrange priority screening for you. The entire process will only take about ten minutes.”

“The screening happens only in front of me.”

Dr. Lane glanced at Ethan. Ethan lowered his voice.

“Clara, don’t make this harder on the doctors.”

I looked up at him. “Who’s the one making this difficult?”

My mother, Eleanor Whitmore, pushed open the door and walked in.

I showed her my daughter. “Mom, she has the fragrance.”

My mother lowered her head and took a breath. Her eyes immediately turned red.

“She does. It’s faint, but it’s there.”

I gently wiped behind my daughter’s ear and across her palm with sterile gauze, then placed it into a sealed bag.

As I sealed the bag, I recorded everything on my phone, making sure the time, bed number, and my daughter’s hospital ID bracelet were clearly visible.

Ethan stared at me. “What are you doing?”

“Preserving evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

I looked at him. “Evidence that my daughter had been in my arms.”

His expression finally darkened slightly.

Pets weren’t allowed in the hospital unit. So my mother took our dog, Maple, down to the underground parking garage.

Maple had grown up with my mother in the Fragrance Archive. She could distinguish scents better than most people.

My mother placed the sealed bag inside her handbag and handed it to the driver to take downstairs.

Ten minutes later, the driver sent me a video.

Maple approached the opening of the bag, her tail shooting straight up. She pressed her nose against it and let out a low whine.

She remembered. Only then did I finally relax a little.

Ethan stood beside my hospital bed, questioning me.

“Clara, did you read something that messed with your head?”

I smiled faintly. “Like the messages you sent to Evelyn Hart?”

His pupils tightened. “You went through my phone?”

“You were texting another woman while I was giving birth to your child. Ethan, tell me. Who’s the one who has something to hide?”

He was silent for a moment. Then he put on that same gentle expression again.

“Evelyn was in a bad state. I was only trying to comfort her. She was giving birth alone upstairs. That was dangerous too.”

The stream of comments appeared before my eyes again.

【Dangerous? Her baby was already gone.】

【Every word he says was carefully planned.】

I closed my eyes for a moment. Then I tightened my grip around my daughter’s tiny hand.

“Ethan, starting today, you’re not allowed to be alone with her.”
