His fury hummed through the screen.

He said: [My grandma was a huge movie star back in the day. You’ve definitely seen her films.]

[In fourth grade, a girl handed me a love letter and insisted on coming home with me.]

He sent a cheesy cool-guy emoji wearing sunglasses.

Then he added: [Let me come see you. Once you meet me, you’ll only like me more. You’ll want to talk to me even more.]

Online, Ethan was warm, energetic, and never short of words.

I gave him one lukewarm line about being scared of regret, and his messages poured in nonstop.

[I’ve lost count of how many confessions I’ve gotten.]

We weren’t officially together yet then.

But right after that message, he quickly followed up with two more.

That evening, my sister—who’d been totally wrapped up in her new relationship—suddenly asked me to have dinner with her.

I was waiting for her on the second floor of the cafeteria when she arrived.

She was as radiant and stunning as ever.

I sat down across from her at a corner table, and she handed me a paper bag.

“Got you sunscreen and bug spray,” she said.

I looked at her. “How come you have time for me?”

My sister folded her arms on the table and tugged the corner of her mouth into a faint smirk.

“What, are you gonna pretend you don’t know me again?”

She was talking about middle school.

I’d always lived in her shadow.

All through elementary, everyone asked me, “Eliza, are you really Vivienne Harper’s sister?”

They’d cover their mouths and laugh next to me.

“You two look nothing alike. Did your parents adopt you or something?”

So when I started middle school, I began avoiding her.
