Calloway came home the day Blythe was discharged.

He sat across from me in silence for a long time before finally speaking.

“Why did you push her?”

He stood, walked over, and looked down at me.

“Did you do it on purpose?”

“Maren, you owe me a child.”

“You’re going to give me one.”

Pain spread through me in a slow, suffocating wave.

“So this is the explanation you promised?”

“Fine,” I said, “How do you want me to repay you?”

He reached out and gently stroked my hair.

“You still have bone marrow, don’t you?”

“Save Blythe first. Once you recover, you can give me another baby.”

Every time I used to break down, he would touch my hair like that.

Now he did it the same way.

Nausea rolled through my stomach.

“Calloway, Blythe hurt me.”

He cut me off.

“That doesn’t matter. What matters is that I love her.”

Then he paused, the corner of his mouth almost lifting.

“Why do you think I was at that courthouse five years ago?”

I froze.

“It wasn’t a coincidence.”

“I’ve loved Blythe for years. Since college.”

“But she only ever saw Brennan.”

He crouched in front of me, bringing himself level with my eyes.

“Do you know how long I waited?”

“I waited for her to choose Brennan. I waited for them to destroy your marriage. I waited for her to come back to me.”

“For five years, I thought about her every single day.”

He paused again, as if remembering something beautiful.

“You thought I was saving you.”

“I was only waiting for my chance.”

I bit down hard on my lip, but the tears fell harder.

Calloway stood.

“I’ve already arranged everything with the hospital for the marrow donation.”

He walked to the door and changed his shoes.

Then he looked back.

“Oh, and Maren?”

“Don’t run. Don’t call a lawyer.”

“You know what I can do.”

I sat alone in the dark for a long time.

Then I called a number.

“Attorney Whitlock.”

“Draft the divorce papers for me.”

The next day, Calloway came to take me to Briarfall Medical Center.

He wanted me admitted early for pre-donation screening.

He packed my hospital bag like he had done this a hundred times.

He said he wouldn’t stay with me.

He had to take care of Blythe.

“She’s afraid of pain,” he said, “She needs someone with her before surgery.”

My phone buzzed.

Messages from Blythe.

Blythe Carrow: [Maren, thank you for agreeing to donate bone marrow to me.]

Blythe Carrow: [I’ll take good care of Calloway for you.]

Blythe Carrow: [Consider it my way of repaying you.]

Blythe Carrow: [Honestly, I’m not even that jealous of you anymore. Everything you had has already been taken from you.]

Blythe Carrow: [I saw your paperwork that day. You’re pregnant, aren’t you? Too bad. You won’t get to keep this baby either.]

I deleted the messages.

The next day, after the bone marrow donation, I went through with the abortion procedure.

By the time the nurse found me, I was hemorrhaging.

Emergency surgery.

Blood transfusions.

The heart monitor beeped from beginning to end.

Calloway got the call while he was waiting outside Blythe’s transplant room.

It was a nurse.

She told him his wife was bleeding badly.

She told him I was in emergency care.

He hung up calmly.

He thought it wasn’t serious.

When Blythe was wheeled out of the transplant room, Calloway held her hand.

Her face was pale. Her lips were cracked.

He lowered his head and kissed the back of her hand.

“It’s over.”

“From now on, we’ll be together properly.”

Blythe gave him a weak smile.

“Where’s Maren?”

Calloway glanced at his phone.

Then he suddenly stood.

“I need to make a call.”

He walked to the end of the hallway and dialed the hospital.

“My wife…”

“Mr. Draven.”

The nurse’s voice was sharp.

“Your wife is in the ICU. She is not out of danger.”

“She donated bone marrow and then came in for an abortion. She is in critical condition.”
