Blythe miscarried.

Calloway stood against the wall with both hands buried in his hair.

Brennan crouched on the other side of the hallway, his eyes bloodshot.

Both of them loved Blythe.

And I didn’t need either of their love.

My wrist still hurt. The fall had scraped the skin raw, but neither of them asked about it.

They only stared at me.

“Are you satisfied now?”

“She started—”

I didn’t get to finish.

Calloway slapped me.

My ears rang.

My head turned with the force of it, and blood touched the corner of my mouth. I stared at him, unable to believe what had just happened.

Calloway’s hand froze in midair.

It took him a long moment to come back to himself. Then he pulled me into his arms.

“Maren, I’m sorry.”

At that exact moment, Blythe appeared at the doorway of her room.

She stood there, watching us.

Calloway straightened his collar, as if nothing had happened.

“Maren, go home,” he said, “Wait for me there.”

“When I’m done handling this, I’ll explain.”

Then he turned and walked away.

Brennan glanced at me once before following him into Blythe’s room.

Why did this keep happening to me?

Calloway, you were supposed to love me most.

On the day Brennan and I finalized our divorce at the county courthouse, a small crowd had gathered outside to watch.

Blythe stood with her arm looped through his, her belly already showing.

Brennan looked at me and sneered.

“Maren, look at yourself. You really think you deserve me?”

Someone lifted a phone and started recording.

I stood there, trying to speak.

It wasn’t like that.

He cheated.

They had been together behind my back.

But my mouth wouldn’t open. My whole body shook.

Then a hand closed around my wrist and pulled me out of the crowd.

Calloway stood in front of me, his back to Brennan and Blythe.

He wiped the tears from my face. His brows were drawn tight, his disgust undisguised.

“For people like that? Not worth it.”

“Don’t cry over them again.”

Back then, he hated Brennan.

He hated Blythe.

He hated anyone who made me cry.

He took off his suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders.

It was too big, swallowing me whole.

“Come on,” he said, “I’m taking you home.”

At the time, I had just lost a baby.

Brennan’s baby.

The day I found out about his affair, I fell down the stairs.

The baby was gone.

While Brennan and Blythe held each other outside the hospital, I signed the procedure forms alone in a hospital bed.

No one came to pick me up when I was discharged.

I sat alone on the hospital steps and scrolled through my contacts, not knowing who to call.

In the end, I called Calloway.

He had been a senior when I was a freshman in college. We barely spoke after he graduated.

The phone rang for a long time before he picked up.

“Calloway.”

“Can you come get me?”

He didn’t hesitate.

“Where are you?”

Twenty minutes later, his car stopped in front of the hospital.

When I got in, he said only one thing.

“From now on, when something happens, call me first.”

After that, he pursued me for a year.

He picked me up from work every day.

On weekends, he took me out to try every restaurant I had ever mentioned.

When I worked until after midnight, he parked downstairs and waited.

“You’ll see my headlights the second you come out,” he told me.

“That way, you won’t feel alone.”

“I’m yours, Maren. I’m the one person who will never let you be hurt again.”

During that year, he was there for every minute of me.

On nights I couldn’t sleep, he stayed on the phone with me until dawn.

When Brennan and Blythe posted couple photos on Instagram, Calloway took my phone and blocked them both.

“Don’t look,” he said, “They’re not worth dirtying your eyes.”

So when he got down on one knee and slid a ring onto my finger, I didn’t hesitate.

I thought maybe life hadn’t been that cruel to me after all.

Only now did I realize this five-year marriage had been a joke.
