He Cheated For Three Years And Asked Me To Save Her Baby Chapter 01

He Cheated For Three Years And Asked Me To Save Her Baby Chapter 01

My former best friend, the one I hadn’t spoken to in ten years, suddenly sent me a message request.

Blythe Carrow: [I was wrong to steal your husband back then. I was wrong to tamper with your scholarship placement.]

Blythe Carrow: [I was jealous. You had everything I didn’t. Even the person I loved was in love with you.]

Blythe Carrow: [I don’t know how you’re doing now, but I owe you an apology. I’m sorry.]

At the same time, a request from my ex-husband popped up.

Brennan Ashford: [Blythe has leukemia. She needs your bone marrow for the transplant. For the sake of the years we were married, please help her.]

Then my husband tried to convince me too.

“You tested as a match years ago. Her doctors want you screened again”

“Blythe grew up in foster care. She never had a family like you did. You’re not really going to let her die, are you?”

I forced down the emotions rising in my throat and looked at him.

“Why are you doing this too?”

He smiled faintly and reached out, brushing his hand over my hair like it was the most natural thing in the world.

“Because I love her.”

Then he lowered his voice, almost tender.

“And I’ve been loving her for three years. You really never noticed?”

***

I hadn’t even had time to process the sentence before Calloway picked up my phone.

With a fond look in his eyes, he accepted Blythe’s message request for me.

I stared at him, stunned.

I couldn’t believe this was the same man who had been my husband for five years.

“Do you even know what happened between Blythe and me?”

Calloway glanced down at the screen.

Blythe’s chat was open. His mouth curved before he could hide it.

“Of course I know.”

Then he looked back at me.

“But don’t worry. You’re still my wife.”

“You’re still my wife on paper. Isn’t that enough?”

The glass slipped from my hand and shattered on the floor.

Calloway walked over, lifted me in his arms, and carried me to the couch.

My vision blurred.

Tears fell before I could stop them.

“So the two of you are really doing this to me?”

He crouched beside the couch and looked up at me. His thumb wiped the tears from my face.

“Don’t cry. It’s a donation, Maren. You’ll recover.”

I pushed his hand away.

He paused, then stood. Irritation crossed his face.

“I’ll be direct, then.”

“Blythe is pregnant with my child.”

“You know how badly I’ve wanted a baby.”

“Her health is dangerous right now. I need you to help save her.”

Pregnant?

My hand moved to my lower stomach before I could stop it.

That morning, I had sat on the bathroom floor for a long time, staring at the two pink lines on the pregnancy test.

I had imagined a hundred ways to tell Calloway.

Would he be happy?

Would he cry?

Would he laugh?

Would he touch my stomach like it was something sacred?

I had even made a reservation at his favorite restaurant for that night.

But now Blythe was pregnant with his child.

I opened my mouth.

No sound came out.

Another message from Blythe appeared.

Blythe Carrow: [I’m sorry. I know nothing I say will make this right.]

Blythe Carrow: [But I really can’t wait anymore. Please.]

The glow of the screen made my eyes ache.

Blythe’s messages sat there quietly.

Ten years.

I had thought that name had disappeared from my life for good.

[I was wrong to steal your husband back then. I was wrong to tamper with your full-ride placement at Ravenshore Honors.]

I stared at that line, my fingers trembling.

That summer, I ranked third in the county and still lost my full-ride spot at Ravenshore Honors College.

I cried for a long time.

In the end, I could only attend a local state college I had never planned to go to.

To comfort me, my ex-husband, Brennan Ashford, followed me there.

Later, we were married for seven years.

Then Blythe got pregnant with his child.

I broke down, demanded answers, and finally divorced him. My friendship with Blythe ended with it.

And now, the same scene was happening all over again.

Calloway kept talking.

“No one ever loved her growing up. I only did what someone should have done for her a long time ago. There’s nothing shameful about that.”

“Maren, you’ll help her, won’t you?”

For one second, I wanted to tell him I was pregnant too.

I wanted to see his face.

But his phone screen was still lit.

His lock screen was a photo of him and Blythe.

So in the end, I nodded.

“Fine.”

He froze for a second.

Then he smiled and stroked my hair.

“I knew you’d say yes.”

“You’ve always been so good.”
