Quinn froze. She thought she’d heard wrong.

Grant spelled it out, word by word. “You don’t think this wedding means anything? Then it’s over.”

Then he started walking toward my ballroom.

Julian stood there with a faint, mocking smile. His eyes landed on me as I stepped outside.

The second Grant saw me, his face lit up with desperate hope.

“Sloane. I changed my mind. The wedding’s back on. I’m not canceling it.”

I looked past him at Quinn, standing there in her wedding gown, her face a whole circus of emotions. I let out a cold, mocking laugh.

“Grant. I’m not like you.”

He was the kind of dog Quinn could whistle back with a snap of her fingers.

I wasn’t.

Grant caught the hint. His face twisted with embarrassment, but he still forced himself to reach for me.

“I didn’t realize it until now. But you’re the one I actually want to marry.”

“We’re on the same team, aren’t we?”

Quinn lost it. She grabbed his arm and screamed.

“Grant! You chased me like a dog! Who the hell do you think you are, calling it off?”

“If it weren’t for me, you’d be dead!”

She tried to trap him with guilt. Grant just shoved her off.

“Don’t think I don’t know. You’re not the one who wrote me those letters.”

Panic flashed across Quinn’s face. She couldn’t hide it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Grant’s voice went cold. “I told you the jokes from those letters. You didn’t recognize a single one. You said they weren’t even funny.”

Quinn had no explanation. She just cried and lied. “I forgot. It was nine years ago. Who remembers that far back?”

“I do.”

Grant pushed her away. “Stop lying. I know everything.”

The jokes that kept him going during the darkest time of his life still echoed in his head.

Every now and then, he’d think of them and laugh.

The person who wrote those letters said they’d never forget them.

Grant had tested Quinn so many times. She never knew a thing.

She stole something that wasn’t hers.

The thought made his blood boil.

But right now, he didn’t want to fight about that.

He would do anything to keep me.

Even if I’d walked away when he needed me most. Even if I’d quit halfway.

As long as I’d stay by his side again. That was all that mattered.

Listening to Grant rip into Quinn, I just wanted to laugh.

Now he didn’t care about saving his life. Didn’t care about true love.

What was this supposed to be?

A prodigal son coming home? A wake-up call?

Grant looked at me, sure of himself. “I know you’ve been waiting for me to cave. I was too proud before. But I’ll change. For you.”

Quinn glared at me, bitter and scared—like I might say yes any second.

The uncles who’d watched me grow up all looked at Grant with disapproval.

But no one said anything.

I knew they’d respect whatever choice I made.

Even if I forgave him, they’d just sigh and keep backing me up.

Everyone knew I’d chased Grant for nine years.

Everyone thought that if he just lowered his head a little, I’d take him back in a heartbeat.

But I couldn’t.

I wasn’t about to become as pathetic as him.

I pulled my hand back before he could grab it. My face stayed cold.

“You made your choice. Don’t come crying when it backfires.”

The words died in Grant’s throat. He couldn’t get a single word out.

I looped my arm through Julian’s.

“Let’s go. Everyone’s waiting.”
