He Asked Me to Divorce Her 19 Times, I Asked Him to Wait Till I Die Chapter 05

I watched the car merge onto the highway.

The hotel screens played on a loop the story of how Gideon and Lesly met, fell in love, and found their happy ending.

Gideon wore a soft smile and made silly faces for her, stabbing my heart like tiny needles.

I remembered how Gideon had once booked a high-end photographer just to make me happy.

“Honey, we’re doing well now. I’ll make it all up to you for everything I owed you before.”

I’d listened to his voice and felt sweet, smiling back at him. “Things don’t matter. People do. Love is

real. That’s enough.”

My wedding to Gideon had been as simple as it gets. The “decorations” were just a few well-wishes pasted on the living room wall. Even the bridal headpiece I wore was bought online for pocket

change.

Nothing like today. Standing here outside the wedding venue, even I couldn’t help but feel awed by

the sea of flowers before me.

“I heard the groom is the boss of Carman Group.”

“This wedding cost millions just to make his wife happy.”

A few girls beside me whispered, full of longing and envy.

“Some people are just born lucky. Born to be the boss’s favorite, set for life.”

“Not like us. We’ll be grinding away like workhorses till the day we die.”

Then came a wave of noise from outside the venue. Someone bumped into my shoulder, and I

stumbled.

That’s when I saw him-Gideon, standing in the middle of a crowd, surrounded like a star. Just like

the first time I ever saw him.

Back then, he had appeared in that small town like a star too, accompanied by the town chief who announced he was there to lead poverty relief efforts. He stood there like he was born to shine.

And yet, that star-that shining star-somehow picked me out of the crowd, the most unremarkable person there. He walked right up to me.

My face flushed. I forgot how to react.

Gideon reached up, brushed a petal off my hair, and smiled. “What’s your name?”

“The groom is here!”

“So handsome!”

Someone shouted from the crowd.

“Mr. Carman! Candy!”

Gideon smiled and tossed a handful of cash into the air. He didn’t even notice me in the corner as he

walked straight toward the venue.

I listened to the crowd marvel at his generosity, then followed them inside. I looked at the sheer extravagance of it all and let out a small smile.

On stage, the host asked Gideon, “Mr. Carmen, whether in sickness and in health, in poverty or in wealth, do you take Ms. Vaughn to be your lawfully wedded wife, to share in all life’s hardships together?”

Gideon and I never had a wedding.

He’d just stood in our living room in front of our friends and said solemnly. “I do, for the rest of my

life.”

Now I heard Gideon say, “I do. I will cherish you, look after you, and protect you, Lesly, for all my

life.”

Lesly teared up with joy and reached out.

Suddenly, the banquet hall lights blazed. The romantic atmosphere died. The wedding music cut

off. Then the screens showed my marriage license with Gideon.

And the legal counsel of Carman Group, whom I’d contacted, stood outside the crowd with a

microphone and spoke to Gideon, “Mr. Carman. Ms. Harvey has filed for asset preservation. Every

penny you spend from now on will be frozen.”

Before Gideon could react, the hotel manager stepped forward with a bill.

“Mr. Carman. Your card has been declined. Please settle the wedding charges today.”
