I thought that after I gave Ethan a clear answer, he would leave.

Instead, not only did he stay, but he also bought a lot of things: school supplies, daily

essentials, and all kinds of snacks.

Everything was the best quality, the kind of things the kids at the group home rarely got to

have.

Seeing how happy they were, I could not bring myself to make Ethan take everything and

leave.

So I let him stay at the group home and play with the children.

Watching them laugh and run around, I suddenly remembered what I had written in my

journal.

[I hope that one day, I can bring Ethan back to the group home to play with the younger kids.]

In my imagination, the younger kids would like Ethan very much.

They would ask him to play their favorite games with them, hide-and-seek and freeze tag.

Ethan would change into comfortable clothes and run around with them.

In reality, that was exactly what happened.

Sunlight fell over Ethan as he ran here and there. Like the younger kids, he was covered in

sweat.

But he showed no impatience. He smiled the whole time.

If I had to say what was different, it was probably the relationship between Ethan and me.

When it was time to cook, I did not stay there any longer. I went to find Mrs. Carter.

While I was washing vegetables, Mrs. Carter glanced at me several times.

I knew Mrs. Carter, the woman who had raised me, was worried about me, so I did not hide it

from her.

“Ethan and I are over. I won’t go back to him, so please don’t worry.”

Mrs. Carter could tell that I did not want to say more, so she did not ask.

But she could also tell that Ethan had done something to hurt me.

That was why her attitude toward Ethan was lukewarm. She was neither especially warm nor

especially cold.

That night, Ethan asked if he could stay overnight. Before I could speak, Mrs. Carter rejected

him first.

“This place isn’t suited to someone of your status, and we don’t have any spare rooms. I’m

truly sorry.”

I did not expose Mrs. Carter’s excuse, nor did I look at Ethan.

But I could feel his gaze staying on me the entire time.

As if he knew that path would not work, Ethan started bringing me flowers after that day, in

addition to the snacks he bought for the children.

Once he started, he kept doing it for a month.

He also seemed like a man with no job at all, spending every day at the group home.

Even when I treated him coldly and threw the flowers into the trash right in front of him, Ethan

only looked disappointed and kept trying.

The day the snack cabinet grew even fuller, I finally could not hold back and decided to talk to

Ethan.

The light in his eyes dimmed as I spoke.

“Ethan, I told you I won’t go back. That means I won’t get back together with you. Stop

wasting your time on me.”

“And do you understand that the group home doesn’t have that much money? You keep

buying so many snacks. Have you thought about what happens after the kids get used to

having them?”

“If you keep this up, you’ll only make me hate you more and more.”

Ethan looked like a helpless child. He grabbed at his hair and let out a pained groan.

“Then what am I supposed to do? I really don’t know what else to do, Sylvia.”

“I know I was wrong. I just want one more chance.”

I shook my head and, just like I used to, gently touched the top of Ethan’s head.

“There are no more chances, Ethan. Stop holding on. Please let us part on decent terms.”
