Canceled Honeymoon Chapter 13

Canceled Honeymoon Chapter 13

My mom was in the kitchen baking an apple pie, so I stepped onto the balcony to answer.

The Blackwoods never truly accepted me, even though they let the wedding happen.

And because of that, my mom had to swallow her pride too.

I spoke first to cut off any pressure from the other end.

“This is Claire.”

“Damian and I are done. You don’t need to worry about me ruining the Blackwood-Astor business alliance or forcing you to accept me as a daughter-in-law.”

“I won’t have anything to do with Damian from now on. Please don’t call here again.”

Thinking of how they’d looked down on my mom for being a regular researcher, I added one more thing.

“This time, I’m the one who dumped Damian.”

There was a heavy breath on the other end, like someone was angry.

“Claire.” It was Damian’s voice, not his mother’s. “What did you say?”

“I said,” I repeated firmly. “Damian, we have nothing to do with each other anymore.”

“Stop calling. Stop looking for me. Don’t bother anyone close to me.”

I hung up before he could respond.

Then I cleaned up the contacts in my mom’s phone too.

Adjusting to life here was easier than I expected.

I studied and sent out my resume.

I thought it’d be a struggle, but I got an interview and passed on the first try.

The interviewer was American too. We hit it off, and he walked me out personally.

After we said goodbye, I was humming and thinking about stopping for some well-reviewed macarons.

Then I saw the person across the street. The smile vanished from my face.

I turned to leave, but Damian caught up in two steps and grabbed my hand.
