My mom wanted me to recover at home for a while.

I shook my head and insisted on leaving on the original date.

That date was also the day Damian and I were supposed to leave for our honeymoon.

Before I boarded the plane, I looked back at the land where I once thought I’d put down roots forever.

I opened my phone and blocked Damian on everything.

When we landed, someone was there to meet us.

Two years ago, a lab in London had asked my mom to come research a topic she was passionate about.

She’d said no because she didn’t want to leave me alone in the States.

She’d always felt guilty that she and Dad were so absorbed in their research when I was young.

Then Dad was gone in that lab accident.

I fell apart and grew to hate their work for a while. My mom couldn’t move on either.

Now, watching her talk enthusiastically with her host, the weight on my chest lifted a little.

People have to move forward.

Mom threw herself into her new job while she ordered me to rest.

The miscarriage was caused more by extreme stress than any physical weakness.

Even as my body healed, my mood stayed low.

I rested and learned about the culture here, laying groundwork for my future life.

Whenever I saw something interesting and wanted to post it, I’d open Instagram first.

And I saw Damian’s face.
