The taste of blood filled my mouth. I swallowed hard and forced a smile for my boss.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t do that right now.”

“Please apologize to the rest of the team for me.”

If it weren’t for me, maybe they wouldn’t have been so unlucky to see their project die.

My boss didn’t argue. He just nodded.

Before he left, he hesitated and turned back. “Claire, between you and Mr. Blackwood…”

“Is there some… personal history?”

“I’m just curious why he would…”

Why he would go so far to torment me.

When I was younger, I might have wanted to explain, to have someone else judge who was right or wrong.

But now, none of that mattered.

“That’s in the past,” I said, shaking my head. “And going forward, there’s nothing between us.”

After my boss left, I looked at my mom.

There was so much I hadn’t told her.

I thought she’d have a thousand questions.

But she just looked at me quietly for a long time before she finally spoke.

She didn’t ask why I’d canceled the honeymoon for London or about the baby or Damian and Poppy.

She just said softly, “Will you regret it?”

Would I regret leaving the person who once saved me for a place where I might never see him again?

I thought about it and shook my head.

“Mom, Damian isn’t that Damian anymore.”

“And I’m not going to spend the rest of my life living in the past.”
