Boyfriend says I’m too much—Someone else’s turn Chapter 06

By the time we finished forming groups, class was almost over.

The guy behind me tapped my shoulder and asked if I wanted to grab lunch together.

“Um, I was going to go with Ash—”

I started to say I was going with Asher, only to see him already grabbing his things and heading out.

His backpack slung over one shoulder, his tall figure disappeared into the crowd without even a glance back.

Clearly, he had no intention of having lunch with me.

I pressed my lips together, a flicker of disappointment rising in my chest.

“From the looks of it, are you two giving each other the cold shoulder?”

In the crowded dining hall, Matthew finally looked up from his pasta.

To be honest, Asher and I rarely had a silent treatment thing going on—mostly because I could never just ignore him.

I knew that if I stopped reaching out to him, he might never speak to me again.

I had no pride when it came to him, but I had a strangely resilient mindset—I could always bounce back.

“It’s fine. I’ll go find him later this afternoon.”

I lifted my spoon, casually changing the subject.

“So you’re into astrophysics? That’s why you took the class?”

“I took it because of you.”

I nearly choked on my tomato soup.

He set his fork down and looked at me seriously.

“Roselyn, have you really not considered going to the UK with Professor Blake for the research program?”

“Out of everyone in our class, he chose you. That’s a huge opportunity—grad school, recommendations, everything.”

The professor who taught our criminal psychology course had always valued me.

More than once, he had invited me to study abroad with him.

On one hand, he was a leading expert in the field. If I could study under him, my future would be secure.

On the other hand, I had never left the country before. And if I agreed, it would mean going overseas, which also meant seeing Asher far less.

And as pathetic as it sounded, that alone felt like a hurdle I couldn’t get past.

I knew if people saw this online, I’d get torn apart for being this lovesick.

Especially as a psychology major, I’d probably get roasted twice as hard.

“Matthew… I’m honestly not thinking clearly.”

I stirred the vegetables on my plate, a little deflated.

“I study psychology, but when it comes to my own feelings, I’m a complete mess.”

Matthew let out a long, dramatic sigh.

“Hey, it happens.”

“A few years ago, one of our professors got so stressed out by a student that he ended up with depression.”

Well…

That did sound worse than my situation.
