Boyfriend says I’m too much—Someone else’s turn Chapter 07

I went to find Asher in his lab.

I texted him in the afternoon.

There’s no way he didn’t get that “the fall of the Berlin Wall” meant the end of the Cold War.

But he still just texted back a question mark.

Only one question mark.

I stared at it over and over, like I could will more words out of him.

But nothing came.

When I pushed open the lab door, I saw Asher standing there, just like before, with his junior beside him.

Scarlett Hayes.

This time, I remembered her name.

The moment she saw me, she frowned and stepped in front of me.

“What are you doing here? Unauthorized people aren’t allowed in the lab.”

Of course I didn’t move.

“I’m here to see my boyfriend.”

“Asher—”

I didn’t expect him to respond. Ignoring me was practically his default.

But this time, he pulled off his gloves as he walked over.

He stopped beside me and looked down at me.

“Let’s go.”

I froze.

Even Scarlett widened her eyes in disbelief.

“But… the experiment—?”

“I’m off the clock. If you want to stay, that’s your call.”

Maybe it was because he’d grown up in such a comfortable environment.

He treated everyone the same—calm, distant, never particularly gentle.

I followed him out of the lab, and against my better judgment, my heart still rippled.

Truth was, we rarely spent an entire evening together.

He was always busy with research. Just this semester alone, he’d already published two first-author papers.

Sometimes he came home for dinner when I cooked. Sometimes he didn’t.

But never like this—coming with me to the grocery store.

I knew exactly what he liked to eat.

While I was picking out potatoes, I glanced up and saw him leaning against the cart by the freezer section.

Looking at me.

There was something striking about him—sharp, almost dangerous in the way he looked. The kind of face one couldn’t forget after one glance.

Cool white light fell behind him as he stood there quietly, watching me.

I had no idea what he was thinking.

I found out soon enough after we got home.

The lights were still off. I was about to put the groceries down and turn them on when he grabbed me by the back of my neck and kissed me.

And somehow, we ended up in the entryway again, collapsing onto the floor.

At this point, I really should clear out the pile of shoes by the door.

At least this time, he lifted a hand to shield my head.

For us, this kind of thing was just… something couples did.

As for love, mine probably ran deeper than his.

He rarely responded to me in daily life.

But in moments like this, he responded more.

Moonlight fell across his face for no reason at all.

I could tell he was looking down at me, but I couldn’t read his expression.

I never really knew what I looked like in his eyes.

I only knew that as long as I held on to him, he was mine.

As for everything bitter and humiliating that came with it, that was on me.

I’d deal with it myself.

I would throw myself into this completely, without holding back.

And one day, when I couldn’t take it anymore, I’d leave.

I didn’t have the energy to cook after everything, so dinner ended up being made by Asher.

I rarely ate food he cooked.

To be fair, it tasted pretty good.

“You should cook more often.”

I nodded, half teasing, half sincere.

But after his shower, refreshed and composed, he had already returned to his usual detached self.

He gave a quiet “hmm” in response, lips pressed together, distant as ever.
