Damon’s hand tightened around the phone subconsciously.

But deep down, he refused to believe what the staff had said.

He convinced himself it was my revenge, a trap I’d set to punish him and Gwen,

There was no way his healthy baby, being cared for at the hospital, could be dead.

I must have secretly taken the child away to force him to back down.

At that thought, he angrily threw his phone aside, jumped into his car, and sped to the hospital like

a madman.

He stormed into the hospital lobby, grabbed a nurse, and glared at her wildly. “Where did Kaley hide my baby? What kind of job are you people doing, you can’t even keep an eye on a single baby?”

The nurse flinched and stammered, “Mr. Garner…. the baby is gone. It’s legal for the mother to take

the baby’s body.”

Damon snapped at her words.

He shoved her aside, his eyes bloodshot as he shouted, “How could my child possibly be dead? You’ve obviously been bribed by her! You’re all talking nonsense!”

He spun into the doctor’s office and slammed his hands on the desk. “Give me my baby back! I

know you’re helping Kaley hide him!”

The doctor looked at him with exhausted resignation.

At last, he held out the medical record. “Mr. Garner, see for yourself.”

Black words on white paper showed the exact time of the baby’s death and the full details of the

rescue attempt.

Damon’s eyes scanned the page, his mind going blank, yet he still refused to accept it.

He tore the record to pieces and screamed, “Tell me how much she paid you to lie to me!”

He grabbed the doctor by the collar. “She knows how much this child means to me. She took her

to punish me, didn’t she?”

The doctor tore free and stepped back coldly. “Mr. Garner, calm down. The baby really is gone. Mrs. Garner only took the body. My condolences.”

“Calm down?” Damon was beside himself. He kicked the desk over. “She took my child away. How

the hell am I supposed to calm down?”

He pulled out his phone and called me again, but there was still no answer.

He glared at the doctor, his voice vicious. “Call her right now. Tell her to bring the baby back to the

hospital within an hour. Or I’ll sue her, take full custody, and make sure she never sees the baby

again!”

The doctor could only shake his head at the sheer absurdity of it all, repeating over and over, “Mr.

Garner, the baby really is dead. It’s true.”

Damon ignored him, walked to the center of the lobby, and waited.

He stared at his watch, each second feeling like torture.

He still insisted Kaley would show up with the baby

After all, the child meant everything to her. How could she ever be willing to give up custody?

Yet as time slipped away, his initial certainty slowly gave way to unease.

He began to panic, pacing uncontrollably in the lobby.

No. No. The baby was alive. Kaley was just throwing a fit.

He kept telling himself that, over and over, but the dread in his heart only grew thicker with each

passing moment.

Several nurses walked by, muttering quietly when they saw him.

“He couldn’t be bothered when the baby was born. Now that she’s gone, he’s playing the loving

father.”

“Exactly. Pathetic. Good thing the mother came to her senses and left him.”

Damon froze, replaying their words in his head.

Then a chill spread through his entire body. He began to wonder if they were telling the truth.

Was the baby really gone?

The thought squeezed his heart until he could barely breathe.

If the baby was truly dead, where had Kaley taken her?

Too many questions blurred his vision, and he nearly collapsed.

Just then, his phone rang. He thought it was me and answered immediately.

“Honey, is that you? Where’s our baby?”

But only a cold voice from the funeral home spoke back, “Mr. Garner? Your baby’s cremation

paperwork is incomplete and the balance is unpaid. Please come settle it as soon as possible.”
