My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 08

Spring passed into fall.

The floating comments remained silent for years. They appeared only when the original storyline reached another major turning point.

Before I knew it, both children were old enough for kindergarten.

Maybe because she had given birth to a daughter so late in life, Margaret treasured Lilly, her biological daughter and my legally adopted daughter, like the apple of her eye.

My son Nason couldn’t compare to so much as one of Lilly’s fingers.

But that was precisely why Margaret treated me even better.

She was getting older. Lilly’s education, future, and eventual marriage would all depend on me.

When Kevin called to announce that he was returning the next day, none of us reacted at first.

Margaret sat on the floor building blocks with Lilly. Dylan had just finished mopping, while I lay across the couch waiting for my freshly painted nails to dry.

“Alison, when my brother comes back, you have to divorce him.”

Dylan sat beside me, lifted my foot into his lap, and began massaging it.

I glanced at Margaret.

She put Lilly down and turned to Dylan.

“If they divorce, can you afford these children?”

Margaret had realized long ago that Nason was Dylan’s biological son.

“My company brings in more than $50,000 a month now,” Dylan muttered. “It’ll make more later.”

“$50,000 isn’t even enough for Lilly,” Margaret snapped. “Don’t even think about making them

divorce.”

“Kevin can give the children the best education and the best future. He’s barely home anyway. How does their marriage inconvenience you? Married or divorced, what difference does it make?”

Dylan’s eyes brightened.

That afternoon, after he left for work, Margaret and I held another family meeting.

“Alison, don’t listen to Dylan. He’s still young. He doesn’t understand how important money is.”

“Kevin is our cash cow. We need to hold on to him.”

Margaret was getting older, and my father couldn’t earn money.

Every expense connected to Lilly had to come from Kevin.

Margaret understood that perfectly.

“Don’t worry, Mom. I won’t divorce him.”

“But what if Kevin wants to divorce me?”

According to the floating comments, Kevin divorcing me was inevitable.

If he was determined, there was only so much I could do.

“Has he found someone else over there?” Margaret grabbed my hand.

I nodded lightly.

“That’s what I’ve heard. I don’t know if it’s true.’

“Then he leaves the marriage with nothing.” Margaret clenched her fist, her eyes turning dark.
