My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 02

My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 02

No, I hadn’t called his name.

A sugary female voice had.

Even through the closed car window, I could hear the happiness in it.

Kevin was pushing two suitcases. A young woman followed behind him, blonde hair spilling over a beige trench coat, thin heels clicking against the pavement.

She hurried after him, repeatedly reaching for his arm. He shook her off every time.

Still, the two of them laughed and talked as they climbed into the car.

I followed them all the way to the airport terminal and watched them walk toward security side by side before returning home.

Kevin had accepted a three-year executive assignment at his company’s London office. Amelia, a brand PR intern, had somehow been added to the relocation team at his request.

Once inside, I sat on the couch in a daze.

The box of emergency contraception was still on the bathroom counter.

For one irrational moment, I considered taking another dose.

Then I read the warning label again and stopped myself. One dose was all I was supposed to take. More would not make it work better.

Just thinking about the comments made me furious.

Apparently, Kevin hadn’t needed to go to London for the assignment at all. He had volunteered solely to give Amelia a fair chance to pursue him.

Amelia Brown had fallen for Kevin at first sight.

When he rejected her confession, she claimed the situation was unfair.

Kevin and I were already married, and she believed he stayed with me only because he had grown used to my presence.

So she demanded a fair opportunity to pursue him.

If she couldn’t make him fall for her within three years, she would give up completely.

And Kevin had actually agreed.

He had taken the London assignment and arranged for Amelia to join the relocation team, giving them three years to carry out their ridiculous little challenge.

If she succeeded, he would divorce me and marry her.

If she failed, she would disappear for good and never interfere in our lives again.

Unbelievable.

What did they think I was?

I was his legally married wife.

My phone chimed.

A bank notification showed that Kevin had wired $200,000 into our joint household account.

I stared at the notification, and half my anger disappeared.

I had never been an ambitious woman.

While other women chased independence, careers, and personal fulfillment, I only wanted a comfortable life.

But laziness didn’t mean stupidity.

Kevin was about to learn the difference.

He had been a senior at my college. We dated for four years and had been married for two.

He had always earned a lot and spent generously on me.

According to the usual revenge-story formula, I should have filed for divorce immediately, built a brilliant career, found a younger and more handsome man, and humiliated my ex-husband.

But I was lazy.

I didn’t want a job.

Still, I couldn’t swallow this insult either.

My phone buzzed again.

[Alison, did my brother leave?]

It was Kevin’s younger brother, Dylan Harris.

[Alison, if anything comes up while Kevin’s gone, tell me. Don’t feel awkward about asking.]

Dylan had attended the same college as us, two years behind me.

He had pursued me too.

Later, at a Harris family dinner, he discovered I was his older brother’s wife and gave up completely.

Thinking about it now, that hadn’t been fair to him either.

Well, if Kevin could give Amelia a fair chance, I figured Dylan deserved one too.
