My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 01 Prologue
The night before my husband left the country, I kept him in bed until dawn.

When morning came, Kevin Harris lit a post-coital cigarette and said, “I’ll be gone for three years. Take good care of my mom while I’m away.”

“If anything comes up, ask Dylan for help. Don’t feel awkward about it.”

I lay in his arms, tracing lazy circles over his chest. I was about to agree when lines of text suddenly floated across my vision.

[Poor Alison. She has no idea Kevin Harris accepted the London assignment just to give Amelia a fair shot at winning him over.]

[Kevin gets to live it up overseas while she’s stuck at home cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, and taking care of his mother. Then, after she nearly dies giving birth to his child, he takes the baby away.]

[She gets forced into a divorce, falls into depression, and dies after being hit by a car while crossing the street.]

[She’s only a side character. This marriage was never supposed to belong to her. Amelia just met Kevin a little too late. If she’d met him first, Alison never would’ve stood a chance.]

The moment I finished reading, my blood ran cold.

I scrambled into the bathroom, read the label twice, and swallowed the single recommended dose of emergency contraception.

The pill scratched my throat on the way down, but I didn’t care.

I’d originally planned to get pregnant before Kevin left.

Not anymore.

But now that I thought about it, perhaps I should give Kevin’s younger brother a fair chance to pursue me too.

Chapter 1
When I came out of the bathroom, Kevin Harris had already shrugged on his coat.

The smell of his cigarette still hung in the air, and his suitcase stood by the door like an uninvited guest.

“Your flight isn’t until ten. Why don’t you sleep a little longer?”

“I still have some things to handle at the office. I’ll head straight to the airport afterward.”

He walked into the bathroom.

While he washed up, I used the passcode the floating comments had revealed and secretly unlocked his phone.

A conversation filled the screen.

Amelia: [Within three years, you’re going to fall for me.]

Kevin: [We’ll see. But if you can’t win me over in three years, you leave me and my wife alone.]

Amelia: [Deal. Kevin, you’re so good to your wife.]

The water stopped running.

I quickly closed the chat and put his phone back where I’d found it.

The comments had been telling the truth.

My husband had betrayed me.

My throat tightened, and for a second, I couldn’t breathe.

I wanted to cry, but I forced the tears back down. I needed to see what that homewrecker looked like with my own eyes.

The female lead?

Since when did a mistress qualify as the female lead?

“I’m leaving,” Kevin called.

“You really don’t want me to take you to the airport?”

“How many times do I have to say no? Three years will pass quickly. I’ll be back before you know it.”

More comments floated by.

[God, she’s so clingy. Kevin’s literally rushing out to pick up Amelia.]

[He’s obviously annoyed. Why does she keep pushing?]

[Finally. Once Kevin and Amelia are in London, we won’t have to look at this side character anymore. Just imagine how sweet they’ll be together.]

The comments made my blood boil.

I was the victim here.

Kevin leaned over, kissed my cheek, and closed the door behind him.

He thought he was coming back?

A cold smile tugged at my lips. I slipped on my shoes and hurried after him.

“Sir, follow that car!” I leaned forward from the back seat, pointing at the silver Tesla ahead. My hands were shaking.

The driver turned to look at me. “Miss, I’m not sure that’s appropriate.”

“My husband is cheating on me.”

I said it as flatly as if I were ordering takeout.

The driver’s eyes widened.

The engine roared.

Within seconds, we were right behind Kevin’s car.

Half an hour later, Kevin pulled into a boutique hotel.

“Want me to follow him inside?” the driver asked.

I shook my head. “No. I want to see who comes out with him first.”

The driver gave me a sympathetic look and said nothing.

An hour later, Kevin finally walked out.

“Kevin!”
