My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 07

“What am I supposed to do? Pregnant at my age… It’s humiliating.”

After learning about the pregnancy, Margaret completely lost her confidence.

Her doctor called it a high-risk pregnancy because of her age and ordered frequent prenatal

appointments.

Dad didn’t know what to do either.

He barely made any money. How could he afford another child?

“Here’s the plan,” I said. “Our due dates are a little over two months apart.”

“After the babies are born, we’ll tell Kevin they’re twins.”

Margaret stared at me.

“The birth certificates won’t match.”

“We won’t falsify them,” I said. “You’ll give birth privately with a licensed midwife. Afterward, you’ll sign a voluntary adoption consent, and I’ll petition for a private intrafamily adoption.”

Dylan’s biological connection to my baby would remain a secret, while Margaret would legally place her daughter with me.

On paper, the children would have different birth mothers and different birthdays.

To Kevin, however, they would be premature twins born several weeks apart after a complicated pregnancy and neonatal care.

It was absurd.

But so was the rest of our family.

The three of us held a family meeting while Dylan was away.

By the eighth month of my pregnancy, Kevin called every few days.

“How are you feeling? Is the baby coming soon?”

“Not yet. The doctor thinks it’ll be another couple of weeks.”

Kevin told me to take care of myself, then secretly called Margaret to verify that I was telling the

truth.

“It’s true. I went to the hospital with her.”

“What’s so strange about that?” Margaret said. “You were two weeks late yourself. Some babies

come early, and others come late. I’m here with her, so don’t worry.”

Naturally, Margaret was on my side now.

When I reached full term, Dad took me to a private birthing center outside the city.

Margaret, whose pregnancy remained high risk, stayed nearby under medical supervision until her own scheduled delivery more than two months later.

Dylan happened to be away on a business trip in New York during my delivery.

By the time he returned, my son was already home.

Two months later, Margaret delivered a healthy baby girl by scheduled C-section.

After the waiting period required by state law, she signed the adoption consent. The family court approved my adoption petition several months later.

Kevin never saw the sealed adoption file.

To him, I said the girl had been the smaller twin, delivered early and kept in extended neonatal care before finally coming home.

He believed me because he wanted to.

When he saw the two infants together for the first time, he stared as if someone had hit him over

the head.

“Twins, a boy and a girl!” Margaret cooed, cradling her biological daughter like the most precious thing in the world.

When Kevin heard that both children were finally home, he wired another $300,000 into the household account.

Margaret now treated me better than her own daughter.

Every day, she carried delicious meals into my room.

I was happily eating one afternoon when the floating comments returned.

[So sad. Amelia miscarried.]

[Not only that, she can never have children again. Kevin feels so guilty. If he’d kept it in his pants, she wouldn’t have lost the baby.]

[No wonder Kevin is determined to take the side character’s children. Amelia can’t have any of her

own.]

“Don’t you like it?” Margaret asked when she noticed me staring blankly at my plate.

I lowered my head, speared a perfectly seared piece of steak, and put it in my mouth.

“It’s delicious. Absolutely delicious.”

Thank God I had seen the comments and avoided getting pregnant with Kevin’s child.

Now he couldn’t take either baby away from me.
