My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 09

“You must be Nason.”

And you must be Lilly.”

The moment Kevin arrived, he dropped his luggage and crouched in front of the children.

Because we were still married when both children joined the household, state law presumed Kevin to be their legal father. His name had been entered on Nason’s birth certificate, and he had signed an acknowledgment of parentage for Lilly during the adoption process without requesting genetic testing.

“Mom, Lilly looks so much like you.”

Kevin held his own biological sister in his arms while looking at Margaret.

She rolled her eyes.

“What’s strange about a granddaughter looking like her grandmother?”

“I didn’t say it was strange. Why do you seem annoyed?”

“Lilly may be a girl, but don’t play favorites. Boys and girls are equal.”

Kevin kissed Lilly on the cheek.

Margaret pursed her lips but said nothing.

“This boy looks exactly like Dylan did as a child. Mom, don’t you remember? Dylan had the same face.”

Kevin couldn’t seem to put Nason down.

“I never realized a nephew could resemble his uncle this much.”

“What’s so surprising?” Margaret snapped. “You looked like your uncle too. People even joked that you were his son. Did you forget?”

“Come on, Mom. It was only a joke. Why are you so cranky?”

Kevin put Nason down, baffled.

Dylan came home from work during dinner.

“Kevin, you were doing perfectly well in London. Why did you come back?”

He placed a piece of beef in my bowl, startling me.

“This is my home. Am I not allowed to come back?”

“You’ve developed quite a temper over the past few years.”

Kevin didn’t notice anything unusual about his brother.

“Of course he has a temper,” Margaret said, adding a slice of roast to Dylan’s plate. “You disappeared for three years. Who do you think handled every problem in this house?”

“All right, all right. Thanks for taking care of everything, little brother. I’ll send you something.”

Kevin initiated a $100,000 wire transfer to Dylan’s business account.

The money did not arrive instantly, but Dylan showed me the confirmation screen.

When the wire cleared, he transferred it into the family holding company he had created in my

name.

“You’re not doing that with him tonight.”

“Doing what?”

I was washing dishes when Dylan crowded me from behind and bit my ear.

“You know exactly what.” He pinched my waist. “If you touch him, I’ll spill everything.”

“Fine, fine. I’ll sleep with the children tonight. Happy?”

I turned around and kissed him before finally calming the jealous man down.

Even without Dylan’s warning, I wouldn’t have allowed Kevin to touch me.

He didn’t deserve to.

“Alison, there’s something I need to tell you.”

That night, after I put both children to bed, Kevin sat on the edge of the mattress and sighed.
