Before he left, Jason stopped with his back to me.

“I’ll take care of this. I’m not getting a divorce.”

I wasn’t in a rush.

He just couldn’t handle being dumped by me a second time. He’d agree eventually.

Jason came back to the hospital the next day.

“I bought those shrimp cocktails you like. And the sliders Lily likes.”

I took the food without any expression and fed Lily.

Lily chattered away to me, but she didn’t give Jason a single glance.

His face fell.

After we ate, Jason cleaned up the trash on his own and washed some fruit.

Lily watched cartoons while I worked on my crafts nearby.

Jason sat for a while, then moved closer to Lily. “What cartoon are you watching,

sweetheart?”

Lily looked at him with those clear, bright eyes. Then she looked down and said

nothing.

Jason couldn’t keep the smile on his face. He made an excuse and left.

The next evening, just before visiting hours ended, he showed up at the hospital again.

I was stepping out to get water when Jason pulled me into a hug.

I struggled, but he didn’t let go.

“I found the security guard. He said Emily told him to do it…”

His voice was shaking. He sounded wrecked. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know she would do something like that.”

“Jess, I’m firing her.”

I pushed him away without a word.

That was the least he could do.

If a kind doctor hadn’t covered the bill that time, Lily might not have had surgery at all.

And her own father sat up on his high horse, waiting for us to come begging.

I went back to the room and got a copy of the divorce agreement.

“Lily stays with me. If everything else looks okay to you, sign it.”

Jason let go of the paper. It fluttered to the floor.

He grabbed my shoulders, his face pleading. “Jess, I won’t have anything to do with Emily anymore. Please. Let’s just be a family again.”

I looked him in the eye. “Jason, if you’d done this three years ago, we wouldn’t be here

right now.”

“You don’t have to sign. I’ll just file for divorce directly. Isn’t Harrington Technologies about to go public?”

He staggered back two steps, his face full of regret.

I didn’t say anything else. I turned and went back into Lily’s room.

Jason didn’t sign the agreement, so I sent him an electronic copy.

For the next few days, Jason acted like nothing had happened. He came to the hospital every day, stayed for a little while, and left.

After Lily was discharged, we moved to a different house.

I didn’t want the old villa. It felt dirty now.

Jason’s mother showed up while Lily and I were giving our new puppy a bath.

“Jessica, you and Jason have been through so much together over the years. You finally

got back together. Don’t go looking for trouble again.”

“Lily’s just a little girl. How could you do that to her? Make her a child of divorce all over again?”

When she saw that my expression hadn’t changed, Margaret Harrington’s jaw tightened.

“You young people take everything so seriously. Emily grew up with Jason. So what if he keeps an eye on her?”

“If there was actually something going on between them, they would’ve gotten married years ago. You never would’ve had a shot.”

She realized she’d gone a bit far and cleared her throat.

“Anyway, think about the child. If you get divorced again, you’ll be on your second marriage. What man will want you after that?”

No matter what she said, I just listened quietly. I didn’t argue, and I didn’t agree.

As she left, Margaret muttered under her breath, “Dramatic.”

I texted Jason, [It doesn’t matter who you send to talk to me. I want a divorce.]

He never replied.

A few nights later, the doorbell rang.

Jason’s secretary was out of breath. “Mrs. Harrington, Mr. Harrington’s had way too

much to drink. Could you please just open the door?”
