Jason yanked his arm free from Emily’s grip and came to stand in front of me. His voice

was urgent.

“Jess, I’ll deal with this properly. Don’t say things you don’t mean.”

Then he reached out to touch Lily’s hair. “Lily, Daddy’s going to make this right for

you.”

Lily turned her head away and dodged his hand.

Jason’s hand hung there in midair.

I said quietly, “Jason, I’m not just talking. The only reason I came back was to give Lily

a decent life.”

“But now…” I glanced at Emily and her daughter. “As long as we’re around you, we’ll

never be okay.”

Emily put on a self-blaming face. “It’s all me and Hailey’s fault. Please don’t fight

because of us…”

But her eyes were full of smug satisfaction.

Jason suddenly roared, “Shut up!”

He had never spoken to Emily like that before.

Her eyes went wide with disbelief. “Jason…”

Jason didn’t look at her. His chest was heaving, and he just stared at me without saying

a word.

The principal tried to mediate. He suggested we go back to the preschool to discuss next

steps.

I only said one thing. “Either that kid goes, or Lily does. Your call.”

I went home to pack some things for the hospital stay, then called a lawyer.

This time, I wasn’t going to be stupid and walk away with nothing.

Jason came back to the hospital not long after.

“Jess, I already transferred Hailey to a different preschool. She and Lily won’t see each

other anymore.”

I said flatly, “Oh. So what?”

“Does that fix Lily’s arm?”

He was speechless for a moment. Then he said, “I’m Lily’s dad. This is killing me too.”

“I know you’re angry. But you can’t just say whatever pops into your head when you’re

upset.”

I cut him off. I couldn’t keep pretending anymore. “Jason, I’m not just upset. I mean

this.”

“I could live with you taking care of Emily and her daughter on the side. But I won’t stand by while they use your favoritism to hurt Lily.”

Jason looked anxious. He tried to explain. “I don’t favor them. You and Lily are my family. I would never…”

I let out a short laugh. “Really?”

A wave of exhaustion hit me. I closed my eyes. “Jason, do you even remember why we got divorced in the first place?”

He had no words. After a long time, his voice came out rough. “I remember.”

Before I could say anything, he rushed to explain. “But I only signed the papers because I was pissed that you didn’t trust me.”

“Then your dad’s company went under. I kept waiting for you to come back to me…”

I smiled bitterly. “So you knew exactly what was happening to me and Lily.”

But instead of helping, he sat back and watched, waiting for me to crawl to him.

Jason’s gaze shifted guiltily.

“I did come to you,” I said, looking him in the eye, enunciating every word. “When Lily had appendicitis. Your company’s security guards threw me out.”

I really had no other choice that time.

After paying rent, I had three hundred dollars left.

When I got Lily to the hospital, I realized someone had sliced open my bag. The money

was gone.

That day, I waited outside Harrington Technologies for over an hour. Finally, the guards carried me out.

They said contemptuously, “He said he never wants to see you again in this lifetime.”

Jason’s voice cracked. “That’s impossible!”

His face was full of shock. His hands were shaking.

“I would never say something like that…”

I lowered my head. “It doesn’t matter whether you said it or not.”

“I used to think if Lily and I just played nice and acted ‘understanding,’ we could have a peaceful life. I was wrong.”

“Jason, you’re not cut out to be my husband. And you’re not cut out to be Lily’s father.”

“This whole remarriage was a mistake. Right from the start.”

Jason stood completely rigid, staring at me. His lips moved, but no words came out for a long time.
