There it was again. That familiar “so sorry.”

I smiled and sent a short reply, [No problem.]

Jason didn’t come home until the next day. I was reading Lily her nap-time story.

I didn‘t grill him about it. Throwing a jealous fit like I used to would just piss him off, and Lily would be the one who paid for it anyway.

After Lily fell asleep, Jason handed me a box.

Inside was the black diamond choker I’d once wanted, the one someone else had bid away from me.

In the old days, I would’ve been over the moon. I would’ve thrown my arms around him.

But now, I felt nothing.

I used to love jewelry. Designer pieces, the whole thing.

Then we moved into Oakhaven Trailer Park. A mugger grabbed the necklace I was wearing and yanked me down a flight of stairs. I hit my head. There was blood everywhere.

That was when I realized those things were worthless flash. And they could get me killed.

When Jason didn’t get the excited reaction he’d expected, his expression shifted. “Let me put it on you.”

I smiled and stepped back. “Thanks, but I’m not really into jewelry anymore.”

He froze for a second.

I went to the kitchen to cut up some fruit. When I came back out, Jason was gone.

That afternoon, I took Lily shopping.

Money had been tight for the last two years. Lily mostly wore hand-me-downs from the landlord’s daughter.

Now I could finally buy her clothes that actually fit.

At the kids’ clothing store, I ran into Emily and her daughter.

And Jason.

The saleswoman was falling all over them. “Mr. and Mrs. Harrington, these arrived just yesterday. Your little princess Hailey would look adorable in these.”

Hailey yelled, “I want this one!”

Jason smiled and swiped his card.

“Ma’am, can I help you with something?”

Another saleswoman came up to me.

I kept my voice low. “I just want to get my daughter some everyday clothes.”

Jason’s group looked over.

I pretended not to see them and walked in with Lily.

When we came out after trying on clothes, Emily and Hailey were gone.

Jason gave me a complicated look. “It’s Hailey’s birthday today. I bought her those clothes as a gift…”

“Got it. Happy birthday to her.”

Then I turned to the saleswoman, who was eyeing us curiously. “I’ll take both of these.”

I was about to go pay when Jason grabbed my arm.

I quickly pulled away.

The saleswoman’s gaze darted between us. “Ma’am, you and Mr. Harrington…”

I smiled. “We’re friend.”

There was a loud crash behind me.

“Oh! Mr. Harrington, your phone!”

I looked back. Jason was staring at me, his jaw tight. “What the hell are you saying?”

I frowned, confused. “Shouldn‘t you be with them for her birthday?”

He kept glaring at me, his chest heaving, but he didn’t say a word.

I didn’t understand what his problem was, and I didn’t want to set him off, so I took Lily’s hand and started walking out.

The second we left the store, Jason grabbed me.

His voice was low. “You’re really just going to let them walk around thinking that’s okay? That she can just claim our relationship like that?”

I laughed. “Isn’t protecting Emily’s reputation your number one priority?”

Jason choked. It took him a second. “You’re different than you used to be.”

Back then, I would’ve lost my mind over something like this.

Jason always used to snap, “Would you stop? Emily’s a struggling single mom. If people think she’s Mrs. Harrington, they leave her alone.”

But now? What was the point of fighting Emily over any of that?

I just wanted to raise Lily well. Give her the comfortable life she deserved.

I said calmly, “Isn’t this what you always wanted?”

Jason’s face turned purple. He turned on his heel and stormed off.

I didn’t care. I took Lily out for lunch and bought her a bunch of other things.

Living without worrying about money again, it almost felt like before the divorce.
