The cops had barely finished scattering my street stall when my ex-husband pulled up.

Jason Harrington got out, looked at the mess, then at my daughter Lily, and sighed.

“Let’s get remarried,” he said. “She’s too young for this.”

I didn’t even think about it. I said yes.

After that, I stopped picking fights. I stopped losing my mind over every little thing.

Lily stopped clinging to his leg every time the daughter of the woman he grew up with came near him.

When he stayed out all night with Emily and Hailey Dawson, we didn’t call. Didn’t text.

When we ran into them in public, we just quietly turned the other way.

We became the version of us he always claimed he wanted.

So why did his eyes go red?

“Jess,” he said, his voice rough, “why aren’t you angry?”

Then, to Lily, “Sweetheart, why don’t you come give Daddy some love anymore?”

After we finished the remarriage paperwork and drove home, Jason came up behind me. Lily and I were standing at the front door.

“Why aren’t you going in?”

I said quietly, “The code changed.”

Just as I spoke, the door opened from inside.

Emily Dawson stood there in an apron, pretending to be annoyed. “What took you so long? Hailey asked about you like five times, oh, Mrs. Harrison?”

I nodded politely.

“Oh my God, Mrs. Harrison, please don’t get the wrong idea. Jason’s been slammed with work, so I just stopped by to bring him some soup.”

“I can never remember that stupid code, so Jason went ahead and changed it to my birthday. I’ll fix it right back, I promise.”

But she didn’t move a muscle. The smug look in her eyes said everything.

“Daddy!”

A little body slammed into Jason’s legs.

Emily quickly covered her daughter’s mouth, putting on a show of being terrified of me.

“Hailey, sweetie, how many times have I told you? That’s ‘Mr. Harrington.’”

Jason glanced over, embarrassed.

When he saw that Lily and I weren’t making a scene like we used to, a flicker of surprise crossed his face.

Lily’s room was full of extra things now.

Emily bit her lower lip. “Hailey sleeps over here sometimes…”

Lily’s little hand tightened in mine. She said softly, “Mommy, I can take a different room.”

My chest, which had felt completely numb until that moment, suddenly ached.

Before, whenever she saw Jason paying attention to Hailey, Lily would pout and cry, yelling, “That’s my daddy!”

And every time, Jason would scold me for not disciplining her properly.

But now, she just stood there quietly, staring at the room that no longer felt like hers.

Kids are sensitive like that. She’d already figured out that only the ones who are favored can afford to act spoiled.

Jason frowned.

Emily rushed to say, “I’ll take all this stuff out. Mrs. Harrison, please don’t be upset with us…”

The two of them huddled together, trembling and teary-eyed, looking so pitiful.

In the past, her passive-aggressive little comments always set me off, and I’d end up fighting with Jason.

But this time, I just watched quietly and said nothing.

Jason finally spoke. “You need to stop coming in and out of my house like this. You‘re a single mom. People are going to talk.”

After they packed up their things, Hailey said tearfully, “Daddy, I want you to walk us out.”

Jason hesitated, then looked at me.

I smiled. “You’ve known Emily forever. Of course you should walk them out.”

He opened his mouth to say something, but I turned around and went to boil water.

Right before he left, Jason said quickly, “Wait for me. We need to talk.”

Only after they were all gone did Lily and I finally relax.
