But Poppy wasn’t done with me.

“Claire, I never knew. You’re a real head case.”

“Sleeping with someone else the moment you get abroad. I bet you did plenty of that back home too.”

“Damian just wasn’t around to catch you.”

She looked so smug, like she’d won.

And suddenly I didn’t want this to end so easily.

I turned to the devastated Damian. “Remember when you said you dreamed about our child?”

He looked lost and confused. I touched my stomach.

“It was real once.”

“But it’s gone now.”

“It died the day you two kicked me off that project.”

“Damian, you remember that day in the conference room. You watched it disappear.”

“This prescription is from my therapist. He said I needed it again after I lost the baby.”

Damian’s eyes widened. He seemed to recall the faint traces of blood.

And the call that had pulled him away.

His whole body trembled. His mouth opened, but no words came.

After a long time, he found his voice. “Claire…”

“I didn’t know. I’m sorry. I didn’t know…”

“It’s my fault. How can I…” He couldn’t say “make it right.”

But I gave him a chance.

“Damian, I have one wish now.”

I looked straight at him. “I’ve always believed people who love each other should be together forever.”

Poppy’s face went pale, thinking I wanted him back.

I kept going. “So I want the Blackwood and Astor alliance to last forever. I want you and Poppy… to grow old together.”
