It was posted by Sophie, his buddy’s girlfriend. We’d connected at a party once.

The caption read: “Summer days are for couples to stick together like this!!!”

The photo showed their whole group on a tropical island with their partners.

And next to Damian was Poppy in a bikini.

I paused for a second, but there was no wave of pain anymore.

I even calmly hit “like.”

Less than two minutes later, Sophie called.

She sounded awkward. “Claire, please don’t take it the wrong way.”

“I copied that caption from some random post. I didn’t check the photo before I uploaded it. I swear I didn’t mean anything by it!”

“It’s fine,” I said evenly.

I wanted to end the call, but Sophie kept talking.

“Claire, did you and Damian have a fight?”

“I can tell he still cares. Even though he’s with us, he’s been in a mood.”

“He keeps staring at his phone like he’s waiting for a message.”

“Half the time Poppy is all over him, he doesn’t even notice…”

I knew what she was trying to say.

Besides me, the other girlfriends were also sick of Poppy being the group’s princess.

But I didn’t care about any of that now.

I made an excuse to hang up and went through my contacts again.

I deleted anyone connected to Damian.

I thought I was finally free, but I forgot one thing.

My mom’s contacts weren’t cleaned up.

A week later, the group trip ended.

And my mom’s phone lit up with a call from “Mrs. Blackwood.”
