I left work early. On purpose.

Trying to avoid Chase.

But when I stepped out of the Sterling Group building.

Adrian was there.

Standing in front of the entrance. A bouquet of flowers in his hands.

“Claire.”

“I want to prove to you-I can do this.”

Snow began to fall-light, fine.

Adrian stood under the streetlamp, his breath pluming in the cold air.

“The things you used to do for me-I’ll do them now. Be the one reaching out first. Care about your day. Ask

what happened.”

I looked at him.

Then said, “You couldn’t do it when we saw each other every day. Now we’re in different cities. You really

think that’s possible?”

Something flickered in Adrian’s eyes-like he still thought he had a chance.

“It wouldn’t be long-distance. Evelyn’s been spreading rumors at Riverdale. Caused problems. I resigned.

Give me some time-I’ll find a new position here. Claire. We can start over.”

I didn’t want to drag this out. I was done.

So I cut him off.

“Actually.”

“I already have a new beginning.”

Adrian froze. He didn’t understand.

“What new beginning?”

Chase’s message flashed through my mind. My throat tightened.

“I already have a boyfriend.”

Adrian’s face went rigid. He didn’t believe it.

‘Who? You didn’t move on that fast-”

‘It’s me.”

A voice cut in.

[ spun around.

Chase was right there. I had no idea when he’d appeared. He reached out, took the flowers from Adrian’s hands-casual, effortless-glanced down at them, then tipped his chin up.

“Nice flowers.”

“You can go now.”

Adrian stood frozen. His lips parted-but nothing came out.

Finally, a low breath escaped him.

“So.”

“It’s too late.”

No one answered.

Chase took my hand and pulled me away.

Behind us, Adrian stood alone in the snow.
