You Wanted Space! We’re Done, Dr. Whitmore Chapter 02

My manager gripped the paperwork, hesitation etched across his face.

“A relocation transfer means you’re moving to another city. That’s a big decision. You should at least talk it over with your boyfriend. You two are already at the plus-one stage. You shouldn’t rush into something like this.”

I didn’t hesitate. I scrawled my name across the bottom line.

“No.”

The last time I switched jobs.

I’d had two offers. I laid them in front of Adrian. Asked for his take.

He barely glanced at them.

“It’s your life. Don’t make me decide for you.”

But later.

He spent hours coaching Evelyn through her college applications.

With his help, she earned early admission to Riverdale School of Medicine. Became his junior colleague.

Adrian was always reminding me I wasn’t independent enough.

Too clingy.

He’d slide his headphones on and start a medical podcast while I was mid-sentence, gushing about something small from my day. Like I wasn’t even in the room.

He’d refuse to drive me when I was running late.

His schedule couldn’t bend for me.

When I wanted to join his friends’ gatherings.

He told me I needed my own social circle.

I used to tell myself.

Adrian was just cold by nature.

That if I tried hard enough.

I’d become the exception.

Then Evelyn showed up.

Evelyn Carter was the daughter of Adrian’s parents’ closest family friends.

Her parents had asked Adrian to look after her.

I’d assumed he’d find it a burden.

He agreed without a second thought.

And she was the exception.

When Evelyn complained about campus life, he addressed every single thing she said, patiently, thoroughly.

When Evelyn craved that viral dessert spot on a weekday, he drove her there himself.

When Evelyn started her clinical rotation, he introduced her around:

“This is my junior colleague. Everyone, take good care of her.”

Every time I brought it up.

Every time I tried to talk to him about it.

Adrian’s face would harden in disappointment.

“She’s still a kid. Are you a kid too?”

“I’m just looking out for her out of obligation. You’re jealous of that?”

“How old is she? How old are you? Why are you comparing yourself to a baby?”

A baby.

She was three years younger than me.

That’s all.

All the excuses I’d made for him.

He’s just reserved.

He’s busy.

He doesn’t like people relying on him.

They all crumbled against how patient he was with her.

Pathetic.

The old me. Pathetic.

Well.

After my procedure tomorrow.

I’d be GONE.

After that.

Adrian’s life had nothing to do with me anymore.
