You Trusted Her. Now Live as Me Chapter 09

Gavin looked at my completely emotionless face.

In the end, he had no choice but to back down for the moment.

“Nora, I know you’re still angry with me. I can leave now, but I’m not giving up. I’ll wait until the day you’re willing to talk to me.”

He gave Caleb one more look, then turned and left.

I let out a breath and looked apologetically at Caleb.

“I’m sorry you had to see that.”

Caleb didn’t seem bothered at all.

“A woman as impressive as you is bound to attract a few disasters.”

I blinked, then burst out laughing.

Just like that, the cloud Gavin had brought with him disappeared.

I’d thought Gavin would finally give up and leave.

Instead, he rented a place right next to mine.

Every morning, he brought breakfast for Grandma and me.

At first, the stuffed breakfast rolls he made were misshapen, with filling leaking from every seam.

He looked like a kid who knew he’d messed up.

“Nora, it’s my first time cooking. I’m still getting the hang of it. Give me a little time and I’ll improve. For now, just… make do with these.”

I said nothing.

Gavin had once been unbearably proud.

If a trash can tipped over at home, he wouldn’t even bend down to set it upright.

Grandma looked at the steaming breakfast rolls and asked tentatively, “You’re really not going to forgive him? I think he truly knows he was wrong this time.”

I shook my head.

“Grandma, I told you from the beginning. There will never be another chance for him and me.”

Grandma set the breakfast down.

“Whatever you decide, I’m on your side.”

Besides delivering breakfast he’d made himself, Gavin öften came to my café.

He took customer orders and helped clean up.

Even Jamie eventually couldn’t stand watching it anymore.

More than once, he tried to persuade me to take Gavin back.

I never answered, and after a while, Jamie stopped bringing it up.

I told Gavin several times to go back to the Whitmore family.

But Gavin only said, “I’ve already cut ties with them. I’m not part of that family anymore.”

“Nora, you’re all I have left.”

With no other option left, I contacted Margaret Whitmore.

Sure enough, Margaret flew in herself the very next day.

She was as condescending as ever, her eyes full of contempt when she looked at me.

Two private security guards grabbed Gavin and dragged him toward the car.

Gavin struggled hard.

“I’ve already cut ties with the Whitmores! What right do you have to take me anywhere? This is kidnapping!”

Margaret couldn’t be bothered to argue with him.

Just as she was getting into the car, I called after her.

“Mrs. Whitmore, the divorce papers…‘

Margaret gave a cold snort.

“Don’t worry. Once I get him back, I’ll make him sign it.

I smiled.

“That’s all I needed to hear, Mrs. Whitmore.”

Gavin stared at me the entire time.

“Nora, why? Why won’t you give me one chance?”

“Was everything I’ve done lately really for nothing? I genuinely want to start over with you!”
