For the rest of the afternoon, Waldron kept finding all kinds of excuses to dump work on me. Before long, the files on my desk had piled up into a small mountain.

I’d dealt with shady bosses before, but he was the worst. Chloe had warned me-he was the manager’s cousin and had been running wild here for years. Every new girl got harassed. The intern who joined last month was driven into depression by that bastard.

I sighed. This high-paying job was probably slipping away. What a shame.

I stayed late, grinding through his mess. By the time I finished, it was dark outside. The whole floor was

empty, only my row still lit.

I stretched. Shut down my computer.

Darkness swallowed the floor. The power was out.

I froze in my chair. A familiar terror climbed up my spine. I’d always been afraid of the dark.

The nights at the orphanage were the hardest. There weren’t enough caretakers, and because I was a

sensible child, I was assigned to the little room at the end of the hallway. Sometimes I’d wake up in

blackness, unable to see anything. I was six. I’d pull the blanket over my head and shake until dawn.

Later, a kind volunteer sister found out and bought me a small night-light. Its warm yellow glow was like a

tiny piece of the moon that would never go out.

I held onto that light through every long, dark night.

My breath came fast. I stood on instinct, hands feeling along the wall. The emergency light at the hallway

gleamed faintly.

I stumbled toward the stairwell, darkness surged toward me from all directions, swallowing my ankles, my knees, and almost reaching my mouth and nose..

Then something caught me.

My forehead slammed into a warm chest. Two large hands firmly held my shoulders.

Before I could look up, the lights flickered on.

I swallowed hard. I’d already known by his scent who’d caught me. But seeing his face still made my pulse jump.

I pulled back fast, sniffled. “S-Sorry, Mr. Chase.”
