Under the crowd’s urging, Evan picked up the ring. Sophie lifted her hand, a blush spreading across her

cheeks.

Just as the ring was about to slide onto her finger, Evan’s lashes trembled. The ring slipped from his grasp. It hit the marble floor with a sharp clink, bounced twice, and vanished.

Everyone froze.

Evan cleared his throat. “Sorry-I got nervous. Hand slipped. Could everyone help look for it?”

People bent down, scanning the floor. Sophie stepped closer to comfort him. “It’s okay, Evan. We’ll find it.”

Evan didn’t seem to hear her. He stood still, scanning the room, hands slowly curling into fists at his sides-

looking for the ring too.

The SYSTEM whispered in my ear: “Host, let’s go.”

I pressed my lips together, took one last look at Evan, and said, “Okay.”

The moment I stepped outside, the noise behind me picked up again-like the ring had been found, and

someone was egging them on to kiss.

I stopped and almost turned back.

The SYSTEM cut in: “Host, your mission is complete. I’m leaving now. Oh, and Mash is healthy. You’ll see him

when you get home.”

At the thought of Mash-alive and well, waiting for me-the weight in my chest eased a little. I didn’t look

back.

I said softly, “Okay. Thank you.”
