The SYSTEM murmured, “Sorry, Host. I transferred all your memories with him to Sophie.”

I didn’t look up. I pressed down on my lips before I spoke, forcing my voice to stay light.

“It’s fine. They’re destined for each other, after all.”

The SYSTEM nodded approvingly. “Exactly. They really are made for each other.”

On stage, Evan spoke, his eyes on Sophie-dark, calm, holding just the right amount of warmth. But after a

few seconds, his voice faltered.

The crowd whispered: “The ring… the ring…”

Evan came back to himself, hesitated, and opened a velvet box. Inside lay a ring-a massive diamond, the

band engraved with initials.

It was identical to the one on my hand.

My breath stopped. I couldn’t speak. I gripped my ring so hard the diamond bit into my palm, sending a sharp

ache all the way to my chest.

Idiot Evan. A CEO and you couldn’t even buy a different ring. Cheap. So cheap.

I blinked hard,

The SYSTEM noticed. “Host… are you crying?”

I shook my head. “No. Just got something in my eye. Why would I cry? That’s ridiculous.”

The SYSTEM sighed. “Fine.”

Another long silence.

“SYSTEM.”

“Host, I’m here.”

“Why can’t I taste the sweetness in this cake?”

The SYSTEM missed it. “What?”

I shook my head, chewed the cake hard. A few seconds later, tears fell, heavy onto my hand. I fumbled for tissues, but my hands were shaking too much to pull one out.

Someone stopped to look. I didn’t lift my head.
