I floated above, watching his hollow performance-and felt only disgust.

When he mentioned the cub, even as a soul, my heart ached like a blade twisting inside.

I wanted to pull my hand away from his, but I couldn’t.

I could only remain there, forced to watch him perform this pitiful display of remorse.

I didn’t understand why he was doing this.

I was dying. Nothing stood between him and Selene anymore. They could be together openly now.

But that wasn’t what happened. An invisible wall had grown between them.

Kael stayed by my bed, tending to me. He didn’t spare Selene a single glance for hours.

Soon, Selene’s lashes fluttered.

She slowly opened her eyes. Her voice was weak.

“Kael… water…”

Kael didn’t move.

Even when she raised her voice, he never turned around.

She understood. Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes.

“Kael… you blame me now?”

Kael slowly tightened his fists. Then relaxed them again.

“I don’t blame you. I blame myself.”

“I never imagined Aurora would be this determined. If I had known…”

His voice caught in his throat. He couldn’t finish the sentence.

Selene quietly closed her eyes, hiding the hatred gathering beneath them.

When she spoke again, her voice was as gentle as ever.

“She’ll forgive us.”

“No, Selene. We can’t be together anymore. I promised Aurora-if she wakes up, I’ll stay with her.”

“I’ll give you enough territory and resources to live comfortably. You and your son can leave the Pack. I’m sorry.”

He finally looked at her.

But in his eyes were regret, guilt-even hatred. But not a trace of love.

Selene stared at him in stunned silence.

She knew it was over.

She said nothing more, pretended to be unwell, and fell asleep.

When night fell, she opened her eyes again. Kael was no longer by my bed.

Her heart raced.

She hated this. This wasn’t what she wanted.

If I died, everything would go back to the way it was.

She’d be Kael’s mate, the Luna of Blackwood Pack. Everyone would envy her.

Her cub would be cherished, just as she had been as a child.

Driven by a thought she couldn’t suppress, Selene rose unsteadily, almost falling.

She grabbed the bedframe and slowly, inch by inch, moved toward me.

Floating above, I watched quietly.

There wasn’t a ripple of emotion left inside me.

The Fate Scale had already told me–I was about to die for good.

With trembling hands, she grabbed a pillow and raised it to cover my face.

Sweat beaded on her forehead.

“If you want someone to blame, blame yourself for being too brilliant! This isn’t my fault-you brought it

on yourself!”

She said it to me, but it sounded like she was reassuring herself.

“What are you doing?!” A furious roar shattered the silence.

She spun around-and saw Kael, blazing with rage.

He crossed the room in three strides and shoved her away from me.

She lost her balance and crashed heavily onto the floor.

The wounds from childbirth split open again. Blood quickly spread beneath her.

But Kael didn’t even look. His eyes narrowed like a Alpha stalking prey, ready to tear her apart.

“Keep your dark thoughts to yourself!”

“If you even think about hurting Aurora, I’ll hold you responsible for every single thing that happens to her!”

“Kael! How can you treat me like this?”

She screamed, helpless as a Rogue.

Before Kael could answer a sharp electronic tone suddenly echoed throughout the room.

“Beeeeeep-”

He whipped around.

The heartbeat crystal beside my bed finally lost its last glimmer of light and went completely dark.

The Pack healer standing nearby gasped and rushed forward.

“Alpha-her bond is falling apart!”
