“Every time the Ricci family had a gala, Isabella would call me to ask about the floral arrangements, what wine you liked, which partners needed special attention.”

“Does Verona know any of that? Does she have any idea how the Ricci family operates?”

“She’s been in your family for two years, and she still just sits there quietly, like an outsider.”

My hand tightened around my phone.

Alessio’s voice cut through the tension.

“And whose fault is it that she feels like an outsider?”

Sofia stopped.

Alessio said, “The Ricci family is the one that made her an outsider.”

I heard the clink of a cup against a saucer.

Isabella seemed to stand up.

“Alessio, are you turning on your own family for her?”

“Mom.”

Alessio’s voice didn’t rise.

“Everything I’m saying tonight is two years too late.”

On my end of the line, I lowered my eyes. Something in my chest seemed to shift.

Sofia was crying again.

“Then what does that make me? Are you throwing me under the bus just to prove how much you care about her now?”

I heard him open a box.

“Get the ring.”

Sofia’s voice was sharp with panic.

“I already gave it back to you.”

“The jewelry store sent me the engraving confirmation.”

The living room fell completely silent.

Alessio said, “The real wedding ring is still here. What you brought me yesterday was the replica.”

My fingers tightened on the edge of my phone.

Yesterday, she had stood in the rain, clutching that ring box, insisting she was returning what was mine.

Even that had been a lie.
