Isabella started to speak.

Alessio cut her off.

“At the charity dinner, she signed donation agreements on behalf of the family. Her seat was in the third row.”

“At Grandfather’s birthday banquet, she poured wine for the elders while Sofia sat beside me.”

“At Sofia’s welcome-home dinner, Verona personally poured her a glass of wine. She was still wearing that same silver band.”

The other end of the line went silent.

I looked down at my ring finger.

The faint mark from the silver band was almost gone.

Alessio continued, “None of you saw it.”

That simple statement landed with more force than any argument.

Sofia finally broke.

“What about you? You didn’t see it either, did you?”

Alessio was quiet for a moment.

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“I didn’t see it either.”

Sofia seemed to seize on his admission, her crying growing more frantic.

“Then what right do you have to blame me for everything?”

“Alessio, you know exactly how this marriage happened.”

“The Ricci family needed you to get married, and she was the one you had to marry. But everyone knew I was the one you were closest to.”
