Two Weddings, One Wedlock Chapter 05 The Passenger Seat

Most of the people at the reunion had been their high school classmates. They’d watched their sweet, innocent first love unfold, so that history meant far more to them than it ever could to me a “wife” came out of nowhere.

–

I stood to the side, sipping juice and clapping along.

I had to admit, this cheesy first-love-reunion drama was pretty entertaining.

Once I talked to Oliver about the divorce later, I could finally let these two “star-crossed lovers” be together.

While Sofia was acting shy and bashful, Oliver looked tense and gloomy.

He didn’t smile once the entire night.

As soon as we stepped out of the private room, he grabbed my wrist rudely and pulled me aside.

“Mia, we need to talk.”

His voice was hard, and his grip hurt.

But with the divorce looming, I didn’t bother fighting him.

We reached his car, and I cleared my throat, ready to speak from behind me.

–

when a soft, whiny voice came

“Oliver, I’m feeling a little uncomfortable…Can you drive me home?”

Sofia had followed us. Wearing heels, she stumbled right into his arms, as if on cue.

“I don’t really know the others that well. You’re the only one I trust.”

She turned to me with a smug, challenging smile.

“Mia, I get carsick. I’d probably mess up the car. So can I take the front seat? You don’t mind, right?”

I shrugged. “Whatever.”

It was Oliver’s car, not mine.

Sofia’s grin widened, pleased with herself.

But in the next second, Oliver said sharply,

“No.”

“The passenger seat is Mia’s spot. You can’t sit there.”

Sofia’s proud expression froze completely.

I was just as shocked.

Because Sofia had sat there before.

A few months earlier, I’d gotten caught in a heavy rainstorm after work and called Oliver to pick me up.

When I opened the passenger door like usual, Sofia was sitting right there.

“I just ran into Oliver, and he offered me a ride. Mia, you don’t mind this tiny little thing, do you?”

It was a little thing- but the obvious triumph in her eyes felt like a knife in my chest.

Later, I joked with Oliver that the front seat was for wife only.

He’d just scoffed at me.

“You’re being so dramatic over nothing, Mia.”

With Sofia, I never won.

Oliver always chose her.

But now I didn’t care at all.

So why was Oliver suddenly acting like it mattered so much?

In the end, Oliver called a designated driver.

The three of us ended up sitting awkwardly together in the backseat.

I stared out the window, bored, when Oliver suddenly spoke my name.

“Mia, which travel agency did you use for the honeymoon? I’m free soon. We can go again.”

Before I could answer, Sofia cut in immediately.

“You’re going on a trip? Can I come too? I’ve been back for so long, and I haven’t gotten to have

fun at all…”

Oliver faltered, then frowned in clear annoyance.

“Sofia, it’s our honeymoon. It wouldn’t be right to bring you.”

Had hell frozen over?

Oliver was actually saying no to Sofia?

I stared at them in disbelief.

Sofia looked stunned to be rejected. Her face fell, and she immediately started playing the victim.

“Oliver… is it because I’m depressed? Do you think I’m a burden now?”

“Yes, I’m just dead weight. No one could ever love me.”

Seeing her like that, Oliver’s face softened despite himself.

“That’s not true, Sofia. I don’t think you’re a burden.”

“It’s just… it’s really not appropriate. But if you really want, you can ask Mia-”

“I don’t mind at all,” I said calmly, meeting Oliver’s shocked eyes.

“If you really want to go on a trip, let Oliver take you.”

We were getting divorced anyway. A honeymoon was the last thing on my mind.

I might as well give her my spot.

Consider it a head start for their second marriage.

I was just such a nice person.

Hopefully, Oliver would appreciate how thoughtful I was being and sign the divorce without a fight.
