Twenty-Four Hours Later, My Betraying Alpha Crumbles Chapter 01

Twenty-Four Hours Later, My Betraying Alpha Crumbles Chapter 01

My memory lasts only twenty-four hours. Every single day, I have to read the diary tucked under my pillow to learn my own name—Savannah Miller—and to fall in love all over again with Gavin Reed, the Alpha of the Silvermoon Pack.

I had fallen in love with Gavin Reed three hundred and seventy-two times.

But tonight, beneath the full moon, this endless chase of mine finally came to an end.

A bonfire party was underway for all the werewolves at Moonrise Academy. Someone took my diary and read its contents aloud to the entire crowd.

“Hey Gavin, your Omega pup’s over here spilling pages of sappy love ramblings again.”

Laughter and jeers erupted all around. I stared at the figure I had longed for day after day, convinced he would speak up for me.

But the next moment, he walked over, tore the pages out one by one, and threw them into the roaring bonfire.

“Quit pulling these over-the-top desperate acts to lay a guilt trip on me, Savannah. I will never love you.”

Three hundred and seventy-two days of recorded memories were reduced to ashes in mere two minutes.

I stood frozen and let out a quiet laugh.

He was right. Without this diary, I would wake up tomorrow and not remember him at all.

If I didn’t know him, I wouldn’t love him anymore. I wouldn’t keep writing, either.

He got exactly what he wanted.

“It wasn’t me who let others read it.”

My soft voice was instantly drowned out by the jeering laughter all around.

A few male Omegas put on shrill, fake voices to jeer.

“Gavin tied my shoelaces today. Oh my gosh, there’s huge breaking drama blowing up all over North Campus right now!”

Gavin stood just three steps away, his shirt buttoned perfectly to the collar. The firelight flickered against the lenses of his rimless glasses, hiding whatever expression he had.

“Does that even make a difference?” he said. “Did that diary grow legs and wander into someone else’s hands on its own?”

“I swear to you, Gavin, I never gave that diary to anyone.”

I stared calmly at him across the flickering bonfire flames, and suddenly his face felt like that of a complete stranger.

He didn’t believe me.

Gavin paused for a moment, about to speak—

“Gavin.”

A soft, gentle voice cut through the noise. Jessica Brown stepped out from the crowd.

“Savannah, I know you didn’t mean to cause all this trouble—you’re just head over heels for Gavin.”

She paused, her voice dripping with pity.

“But going about it like this is just… tacky, honestly.”

“Don’t be too hard on Gavin,” she continued. “He’s been busy preparing for the Silvermoon Pack’s succession trial. He has to face challenges from other Betas, and the pressure has been enormous.”

“Even if you wanted his attention, causing a scene like this only adds to his stress. Everyone knows you saved Gavin, but hiding behind this amnesia act to win his love? Doesn’t that just come off as ridiculously immature?”

Gavin’s expression hardened. He looked back at me, his eyes filled with nothing but deeper annoyance.

“Jessica is right, Savannah. These little games of yours just embarrass me.”

I looked straight at Jessica’s composed face. I knew exactly who was behind this. Before I went to the restroom, she had been the only person standing by my chair.

“Jessica, you took it from my pocket, didn’t you?” I held her gaze.

Jessica’s eyes widened. She shrank half a step behind Gavin, her voice trembling with fake tears.

“Savannah, what are you talking about? I know you’re embarrassed, but how can you throw such wild accusations at me out of thin air? I’ve been with Gavin this whole time. Why would you say something so cruel?”

Gavin’s face went cold. He moved to shield Jessica behind him.

“Enough, Savannah. There’s a limit to your petty tantrums.” His voice carried a warning, and his overpowering Alpha aura crashed down on me. “Take responsibility for what you did. Don’t try to blame Jessica. She’s not like you. She doesn’t have all those sneaky, underhanded ulterior motives you do.”

The mix of his Alpha musk and Jessica’s cloying lily-of-the-valley scent made my stomach do backflips.

“You’re right, she’s nothing like me!” I pointed at Jessica, then looked back at Gavin. “I’m just an Omega, and you two—an Alpha and a Beta—look down your noses at people like me deep down.”

“Fine. Then why did you tear up my diary?” I took a step forward, and a sharp pain shot through my right knee, making me stumble.

“You could have just let them keep reading. You could’ve just let them keep reading, then. Let the whole academy watch me make a fool of myself while you stand up there all high and mighty.”

Slap!

Gavin’s hand struck my cheek.

I stared at him in disbelief, and deep down, I asked myself the same question over and over. Would the person I love really hit me?

“I ripped that journal up for your sake, Savannah.” He spoke to me like he was tossing me a pity scrap, but his eyes kept drifting down to my right leg. “I don’t want you stuck living in some fake daydream about me.”

“Gavin.” I said his name clearly, my voice steady. ” Did you forget? I only hold onto my memories for twenty-four hours, that’s it.”
