Too Late to be My Dads Chapter 05

Too Late to be My Dads Chapter 05

The room fell into silence, broken only by Sadie’s weeping.

It took a while before Ethan spoke up. “Who did you say beat you up?”

Sadie replied, “Niamh.”

Ethan asked once more, “When did this happen?”

“Half an hour ago.” Sadie found Ethan’s behavior rather strange. “Dad Ethan, do you know where the others are? Can you hurry back home? I’m scared.”

Amid her wailing, Ethan rubbed his temple. “Sadie, Niamh is dead.”

The other end of the line went dead.

Ethan’s voice was icy. “She was in the emergency room just half an hour ago. How could she have gotten to you?”

No voice came through the line.

Five hours later, Ethan, Lee, Ryker, and Tony returned home.

Standing in the living room, Sadie sprinted toward them when they showed up.

Judging by her red eyes, she must have been crying.

“Dad Ethan, what’s going on? Is Niamh really gone?”

Ethan was in too foul a mood to entertain her questions.

Feeling even more hurt than ever, Sadie turned to Lee and put on a sweet act. “Were you together earlier, Dad Lee? Did you hear me on the phone too?”

Sadie burst into tears. “I–I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to lie. I was terrified because you were gone for so long. I was afraid you might abandon me.”

The hearts of Ethan, Lee, Ryker, and Tony would melt every time Sadie shed a tear.

This time would be no exception.

Sadie had suffered so much overseas. Apparently, she was scavenging trash cans for scraps when Ethan

found her

In my fathers‘ minds, Sadie was vulnerable and far more deserving of sympathy than I, seeing that I lived a life of privilege in the last sixteen years.

After Sadie apologized repeatedly, the dads sighed and softly persuaded her to stop crying.

Though Ethan remained low in mood, he said, “It’s not your fault Niamh traumatized you

That was the end of the matter.

Following a brief discussion, Ethan, Lee, Ryker, and Tony decided to hold a funeral for me.

They raised me after all. At the end of the day, I was still family to them.

Besides, Kylee had once been a great help to them.

Hardly anyone turned up for the service.

During the years I was kept in a cage, I didn’t attend school and lost touch with my old friends.

I calmly watched my own funeral.

The System’s voice boomed. “It’s time to go, Niamh.”

My heart skipped a beat.

At last, I would be reunited with my mother.

Just as I was ready to move on, the System said, “Hang on. It doesn’t sit right with me that Sadie gets away with it. Give me a second.”

Amid my confusion, a tall man appeared before my eyes.

My eyes widened.

I never knew until that moment that the System could take on a human form too.

Before I could ask questions, the System approached Ethan, Lee, Ryker, and Tony.

Whatever the System said, the four men paused for a minute before following along.

I went after them.

They left the cemetery and went straight to the mansion, only stopping right outside Sadie’s room.

While Ethan, Lee, Ryker, and Tony exchanged glances, an unsettling noise came from inside the room.

“Babe, don’t leave hickeys on me. Those four are bound to take notice.”

The voice belonged to Sadie.

“I was wondering why you were so bold as to let me into the house today. So the witch is dead.”

The sound of another man’s voice made them freeze.

The voice was hard to forget.

It was one of the men who assaulted Sadie in the alley

When he named me as the culprit, Ethan, Lee, Ryker, and Tony tried to have him put behind bars

It was Sadie who put a stop to things.

According to her, she didn’t want the incident to escalate, nor did she want to always be remembered as

the victim.

What on earth was going on?

All my questions would soon be answered.

The man’s breathing was ragged. “It’s a good thing she’s gone forever. Saves you the headache. You won’t

have to play the damsel in distress anymore.

“Honestly, these men are dense. They believed our story that she hired me for the assault. They didn’t

even notice how she shook like a leaf around me. As if she had any authority over me at all.”

Sadie chuckled. “Mom told me that they’d eat right out of the palm of my hands. If Mom hadn’t faked her death and arranged that phone call to Ethan, we would still be living in the streets abroad.”

The laughter echoed from the other side of the door.

The four men stood motionless.

Around three minutes later, Ryker was the first to act, kicking the door down and marching inside.

The other three were right behind him.

The air was filled with shrieks, shouting, and cries.

The System looked up and asked, “Do you feel vindicated?”

I nodded. “You planned this?”

“Hell yeah. I can’t put up with these men much longer. They hurt your mom back then, and now the hurt is passed down to you.” The System ran his mouth. “They are morons. Do you want to watch up close how Sadie ends up?”

I shook my head and tugged at his sleeve. “Take me away. I want to see Mom.”

After much thought, the System agreed to it.

The System pointed ahead where a black hole materialized.

I made a beeline toward the black hole.

Just as I was about to disappear, I heard someone calling my name.

“Niamh”

“Niamh!”

They were the voices of my fathers

This time, I would never look back again.
