Too Heavy for Tears, the Arrogant Cripple Broke Down Chapter 04

I looked where Dana was pointing and saw the desk closest to the trash can.

I said nothing. I picked up my computer, moved to the new desk, and sat down.

My coworkers whispered behind me.

“I heard Chloe was personally brought in by Mr. Whitmore.”

“You mean Evan Whitmore, the major shareholder who uses a wheelchair? No wonder she’s getting special treatment.”

I heard every word.

I kept walking, numb to it all.

The comment feed was already scrambling to defend Evan.

[It has to be the female supporting character acting on her own! The male lead had no idea!]

[Evan would never sabotage the female lead at work. Stop twisting the story!]

I couldn’t even be bothered to look.

I sat at my new desk, turned on my computer, and continued working on my project.

I had spent three months on it. All I needed to do that day was finish the last few details and submit it for review.

Once it was approved, I would meet my quarterly performance target.

As I worked, the comment feed kept scrolling rapidly.

[How can the female lead still care about work? The male lead is at home refusing to eat or drink. He’s practically losing his mind!]

[The male lead is already punishing himself in such a self-destructive way. Can’t the female lead soften her heart just once?]

I pushed down everything I was feeling, finished the last few details, submitted the project, and went home.

The next day, however, I froze as I passed the company’s quarterly awards board.

The project I had worked on for three months was displayed prominently, but my name had been removed and replaced with Chloe’s.

I stormed into Dana’s office.

“Chloe only started yesterday. Why is she getting credit for my project?”

Dana didn’t even look up.

“Quarterly reviews are coming up. You have more experience, and you’ll have plenty of chances to earn recognition later. Giving her this project will help her establish herself here.”

The anger inside me slowly burned out, leaving only coldness behind.

“Upper management ordered you to do this, didn’t they?”

Her icy silence confirmed it.

I understood immediately.

This was Evan’s revenge.

Two days ago, I hadn’t taken the opening he had given me. I had shattered his sense of superiority.

He had never been able to tolerate even the slightest blow to his ego, and this was how he had chosen to punish me.

No one knew how hard I had worked to pull off that project.

Every night, I had stayed up until two or three in the morning, pushing myself until my heart raced and I gagged from exhaustion.

Yet some people could simply take a shortcut.

I was the one they used to get ahead.

Why did everyone always think they could walk all over me?

A wave of hurt welled up inside me. The recurring fever had triggered another migraine, and my ears rang in waves.

I couldn’t contain my emotions any longer.

I rushed out of the office, grabbed my cup of water, and poured it straight over Chloe’s head.

Her scream rang out at the same time as my question, my voice tight with suppressed anger.

“Why did you steal credit for my work?”

Dana charged out of her office and shoved me hard.

“Nina, what the hell do you think you’re doing?”

My back struck the corner of a desk, and a sharp pain shot through me. I sucked in a breath.

At that exact moment, a group of executives entered the office.

Evan, who rarely appeared at the company, was leading them.

His gaze landed on me, and his brows drew together almost imperceptibly.

Then he motioned for his assistant to find out what had happened.

The comment feed instantly erupted.

[The male lead is worried about her! If the female lead backs down now, he’ll definitely stand up for her!]

[The male lead’s eyes are already red. He obviously feels terrible for her!]

Evan and I looked at each other across the crowd.

It was always like this.

He always held himself above me and waited for me to bend first.

He waited for me to beg and become that same desperate savior who humbled herself for him all over again.

The pain in my back was nothing compared to the pain in my chest.

Suddenly, I no longer wanted to fight.

There was no point.

I looked at Dana, my voice perfectly calm.

“I’m resigning.”

I was leaving Evan’s control. I didn’t care where I went.

Across the crowd, Evan’s expression changed sharply.
