My smile didn’t falter.

I looked her dead in the eye.

“Maybe the one who isn’t loved is the real third wheel. Don’t you think, Ms. Covington?”

Sloane snapped.

She grabbed her hot coffee and dumped the whole thing over my head.

The scalding liquid made me zone out for a second, flashing back to high school, when she’d poured boiling water on me just like this.

The whole café turned to stare.

Sloane didn’t care.

She grabbed my hair, tearing back to slap me.

I knew exactly how hard that slap would land.

I’d felt that exact slap a hundred times over, all through high school.

But this time, I caught her wrist.

And in the shock on her face, I slapped her hard across the face.

“You dare hit me?”

It was probably the first time anyone had ever laid a hand on her.

She stared, stunned, then flew into a rage.

I slapped her other cheek, the crack loud and sharp.

She clamped a hand over her face, eyes wide with disbelief.

“Why wouldn’t I?”

I leaned across the table, smiling, sharp and bright with victory.

“I’m not just gonna hit you. I’m gonna take your man too. What are you gonna do about it?”

Sloane lost it.

She swung at me again—but someone caught her arm mid-swing.

She turned around. I looked past her, eyes red-rimmed, and bit down on my lip as I spotted Harrison.

I’d never seen him this angry.

His jaw was tight, his eyes dark with fury.

“I told you to leave her alone. This has nothing to do with her!”

“Nothing to do with her?!”

His anger was the last straw. Sloane screamed, breaking down.

“If this whore hadn’t seduced you, you’d never be calling off the engagement!”

“Harrison, we’ve been together for years! You’ve known her for months. Ten years means nothing next to two months with her?!”

“It’s not about the months,” Harrison said, cold.

“We both know this engagement was just business. I never liked you. Not once.”

“But I love you!”— Sloane sobbed, lunging for me again.

Her face was red, veins popping out on her forehead.

Her once-pristine, carefully done face was streaked with tears, makeup running everywhere—not a shred of dignity left.

“This is all your fault, you bitch. I’ll kill you!”

She’d always gotten her way by force, and she wasn’t even going to bother putting on a nice act anymore.

I stepped back, tears beading on my perfectly applied false lashes, trembling like they’d fall any second—small, wounded, helpless.

Harrison had had enough.

He wrenched Sloane away from me.

“Quit making a scene.”

Sloane stumbled against the table.

She stared at him, heartbroken and furious, crying.

“Harrison, how could you? You’re heartless!”

Harrison didn’t even look at her.

He rushed over to me, hands on my shoulders, checking me over.

“Are you okay? Did she hurt you?”

I shook my head.

I buried my face in his chest, wrapping my arms around him.

Where he couldn’t see, I arched an eyebrow at Sloane and smirked.

Sloane’s jaw tightened with rage.

“Harrison, the Sterling family will never let you call this off!”

Harrison held me tighter, his voice flat.

“I hold the majority stake in the company. I don’t need anyone’s approval.”

“Sloane, I’m saying this one last time. This has nothing to do with Lena. I’m the one who fell for her, unilaterally. I’m the one who pursued her…”

“If you come near her again, you know exactly what I’m capable of.”

Sloane went pale.

Her mascara was running down her face in black streaks.

She bit down hard on her lip, then turned and fled through the door in tears, utterly humiliated.

Harrison was still comforting me.

I smiled into his chest, slipping my phone back into my pocket.

I’d texted him the second Sloane showed up.

I just hadn’t expected him to get there that fast.
