They Wanted My Mom to Take the Blame, but the Animals Told Me Everything Chapter 05

Even though the snake’s head had been mangled beyond recognition, the onlookers still stumbled back a few paces in horror.

“Oh my god, what’s that? That’s terrifying!”

“What’s wrong with that cat? Why did it drag a dead snake in here?”

“I’ve seen documentaries about this. It looks like a king cobra. Could that be the snake that bit the boy?”

“No way. A cat killed a snake that big and tracked it all the way to a hospital?”

The murmurs grew until the maid standing next to Mrs. Ashford gasped. “I remember now! That’s… that’s the stray cat Leo always feeds in the garden!”

Hearing this, Orion strode over and knelt beside the carcass. Showing no disgust, he reached out to examine the shredded tissue around the snake’s head.

“Flashlight.”

A bodyguard immediately handed him a tactical light.

The bright white beam illuminated the severed neck, and Orion’s hand suddenly froze.

Tangled in the snake’s fangs was a single shred of deep blue fiber, so thin it was nearly invisible to the naked eye, but completely exposed under the harsh glare.

He pinched the fiber and turned to look at the silk pajamas Leo had been wearing, which now lay cut open on the bedside table.

Because Leo had sensitive skin, the fabric had been custom-made.

The left sleeve had been torn open right over the bite wound, leaving frayed threads of the exact same color curling outward.

Orion held the fiber up to the light.

“Compare them.”

A bodyguard stepped forward with tweezers, carefully retrieving the fiber from the fangs and taking a sample from the torn pajama sleeve.

Placing the two side by side on a piece of white sterile gauze, the verdict was instant: the color, the material, and the weave pattern were a perfect match.

It was the exact same custom fabric.

The room went still for half a second. Then the whispers started.

“So the boy really was bitten by this king cobra?”

“Then what was the deal with the standard cobra Miss Hanish brought in?”

“Then Miss Hanish brought the wrong snake on purpose?”

Before the whispers could settle, Leo suddenly convulsed on the bed, his little face contorting in pure agony.

His limbs began to convulse, and the oxygen saturation on the monitor dropped below 90 and kept falling.

“Leo!”

The thread of Mrs. Ashford’s rosary snapped, sending the beads clattering across the floor.

My mother lunged forward, flipping open Leo’s eyelids to check his pupils.

She whipped around and shouted at the nurse, “Prepare the polyvalent anti-venom! Now! Hurry!”

Then she turned to Orion, her voice fast and crystal clear. “Mr. Ashford, your son is exhibiting a classic, severe neurotoxic reaction. A standard cobra’s venom is primarily cytotoxic and wouldn’t attack the nervous system this quickly.”

“This proves beyond a doubt he was bitten by a king cobra. He needs antivenom that covers neurotoxic venom immediately!”

Orion took a look at his seizing son. “Do it.”

Ivy had already sprinted back with the vial. My mother took the syringe and drove the needle straight into Leo’s IV line just as Callie collapsed to the floor.

“It wasn’t me, I didn’t…”

“Shut up.” Orion didn’t even turn his head.

Callie’s face went completely bloodless, and she didn’t dare utter another syllable.

After pushing the anti-venom, my mother administered a dose of dexamethasone to combat any allergic reaction.

Slowly, the numbers on the monitor began to climb back up.

The boy’s spasms gradually subsided, and his ragged gasps leveled out into a steady, calm breathing pattern.

A collective sigh of relief swept through the entire ER.

Then, Orion turned around.

He looked down at Callie. *You claimed you personally caught the snake that bit Leo. Explain this.”

Callie’s lips trembled violently. “I… I did… Leo ran off to chase a ball, and when I heard him crying, I rushed over. I saw a snake trying to slide away, so I…”

“Which snake did you see?”
