But then he remembered everyone knew how crazy I was about him. And that thought settled his nerves.

He sighed, like he was talking to a stubborn child.

“Don’t play these hard-to-get games anymore.”

He shot a glance at Bryce.

“Bryce, you’re my friend. How could you help her mess with me? I’m not falling for it.”

I was so disgusted by his audacity that I almost laughed.

“I just got the license with Bryce. Believe it or not.”

Bryce saw I was getting annoyed and pouted.

“Lillian, I’m nothing like him.”

Rowan was livid.

He took a breath, looked us over, and shook his head smugly.

“Don’t lie to me.”

“You don’t even have the certificate in your hand. I know you want to marry me. I brought my ID today.”

“Come over now, apologize to Lorinda for what you’d done yesterday, and I’ll agree to get the license with you right here.”

Lorinda stepped out of a taxi and walked over, looping her arm through Rowan’s.

“Rowan, why are you at City Hall so early?”

She turned to me.

“Oh, Lillian’s here too.”

Her face shifted into a tearful pout.

“You can hate me if you want. I won’t blame you. But please don’t guilt-trip Rowan.”

I stared at Rowan, genuinely curious how he’d respond.

He stayed silent, which said enough.

Lorinda let out a little gasp and collapsed into Rowan’s arms.

“Rowan, my leg still hurts so much. I think it twisted when Lillian pushed me yesterday.”

Rowan immediately held her and barked at me.

“Lillian! Apologize to Lorinda right now. Or don’t even think about getting the license with me.”

I looked at him with the same cold detachment I’d give a stranger.

I pulled the certificate out of Bryce’s bag and held it up to him.

“You really think you still have a chance?”
