They Sacrificed My Marriage to Save My Brother Chapter 06 One Who Sins Against Himself Cannot Survive
The hospital’s disinfectant stung my nostrils like invisible needles.
I lay on the cold, rigid emergency bed, my left hand swathed in bandages and my right arm hooked up to an IV drip.
A pale blue holographic screen suddenly materialized out of thin air.
Todd’s system task progress bar glowed a menacing, angry red: Weekly intimacy task completed. Next refresh: 6 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes.
My knuckles whitened as I gripped the bed frame, hatred piling relentlessly atop the hatred already festering in my chest.
Beep!
My phone vibrated on the nightstand, Nyx’s name lighting up the screen.
Her message reeked of feigned tenderness. “Rainer, I’m so sorry. Todd says the system will unbind from him if we obtain the core data from your doctoral dissertation. Once this is all over, let’s start over, okay? I’ll make your favorite lasagna for you.”
I stared at the words “start over”, my stomach twisting with revulsion.
The shattered prayer beads, the blood-soaked cord, the obscene sounds that had leaked from the bathroom—every painful memory sliced into me like shards of glass lodged in my throat.
I typed a cold reply: “The dissertation files are on the lab server. The password is our wedding anniversary.”
The second I hit send, my hidden system blared urgently in my mind: Revenge System activated. Alert: Todd and Nyx are attempting to steal classified research trade secrets.
I narrowed my eyes and curled my lips into a cold smile.
Heaven may spare the wicked, but hell always reserves a place for them.
At three in the morning, I pulled out my IV and slipped out of the hospital undetected.
The frigid night wind cut straight through my thin hospital gown, and the wounds on my back burned sharply, as if someone had rubbed salt into every raw injury.
The lab’s glass entrance glinted coldly in the darkness. The fingerprint scanner recognized my identity instantly and unlocked the door.
Dim indicator lights flickered inside the server room. I climbed into the ventilation shaft and lay in wait, ready to catch the two greedy rats.
It was not long before the door beeped open again. Todd, wearing my spare lab coat, strode directly toward the server.
Nyx followed closely behind, clutching the access card I’d once given her, her face deathly pale.
“Hurry,” she urged anxiously. “Rainer would never cooperate this easily. This could be a trap. Get the data while he’s still confined in the hospital.”
Even in her panic, she lifted a hand to straighten his tie—the very tie she’d gifted me for my birthday the year before.
A mocking smirk tugged at my lips. I pressed the remote button on my phone.
A shrill, piercing alarm blared through the server room, red warning lights flashing frantically.
Todd spun around in blind terror, his face bathed in the harsh crimson glow of the surveillance camera.
I spoke softly into my phone’s microphone, my tone icy and unyielding. “Sneaking into the lab at this hour… here to sort out my research data, are we?”
Todd froze on the spot, his complexion draining to ashen gray.
Nyx scrambled frantically to cut the power, but failed to locate the main switch.
A moment later, the heavy alloy security door slammed shut with a loud boom, locking them tightly inside.
