The hidden system’s cold, mechanical voice exploded inside my head as I lay crumpled on the floor, coughing up blood.
Dolia’s high heel still ground ruthlessly into my hand, crushing my knuckles beneath its hard tip. Sharp, searing pain spread through every one of my limbs.
“Detected intense vengeful intent. Full system support activated.”
I suddenly burst out laughing, fresh tears streaming down my blood-streaked face.
“Nyx, come quick—Rainer’s lost his mind!” Dolia lifted her foot, her tone laced with suspicion.
“Crazy or dead, it makes no difference. Crazy gets you sent to the asylum. Dead gets you buried.”
At her words, I clenched my fists hard, my nails digging deep into the mangled, bloodied flesh of my palm.
I stumbled unsteadily to my feet and lifted my eyes to the sky—it was eerily, brightly blue.
Everything I had lost… I would take it all back.
My gaze snapped back to Dolia.
“Rainer! How dare you glare at me?!”
Dolia shrieked and lunged toward me again, but Todd held her back.
He bent slightly, dabbing a fleck of blood off his suit with a handkerchief. His smile was sweet, yet laced with poisoned honey.
“Rainer, none of this would’ve happened if you’d just cooperated earlier. You got blood all over the suit Nyx gave me. What are you going to do about it?”
I coughed up a mouthful of blood and let out a low laugh. “Watch your tongue, Todd.”
His smile dropped instantly, his gaze turning sharp and icy. “Oh? You dare threaten me? You’re nothing but a worthless piece of trash now.”
“Not for long.”
His smile froze completely on his face.
Nyx hurried over to mediate, her tone forced and placating. “Rainer, enough. This is Todd’s welcome party. Apologize right now.”
She reached out for me, but I dodged her touch. She was tainted in my eyes. I wanted nothing to do with her.
“Apologize for what? For him stealing my research… or for him stealing my wife?”
Dolia raised her hand to slap me but hesitated at the last second.
The guests continued whispering among themselves, staring at me as if I were nothing more than a circus freak.
“You’ve completely lost your mind. Let me take you to a mental hospital.”
She grabbed my arm, attempting to drag me away, but I stood firmly rooted in place.
“Don’t touch me. You’re filthy.”
Kael snatched an ashtray and hurled it straight at me. I sidestepped, and it shattered violently against the wall.
“Dad, you’ve always wanted to kick me out of this family, haven’t you? Fine. I won’t wait for you to cast me out—I’ll leave on my own. From today onward, we have no familial ties whatsoever.”
I shrugged off Nyx’s hand and walked straight toward the door.
Insults and curses rained after me the entire way.
“Rainer! If you walk out that door, don’t you ever dare come back!”
“Rainer! You ungrateful brute! You’re worse than scum!”
“Rainer! You’re the dirty one— a thousand times dirtier than any of us!”
“Rainer! I’ll take excellent care of Nyx for you!”
I paused briefly, glancing at the banner hanging on the wall—WELCOME HOME, BELOVED SON TODD.
My voice was quiet, clear, and unshakable.
“The divorce papers will be delivered to this house tomorrow. By my own hand.”
