They Regretted It After I Gave Up Chapter 08

By the third slap, the corner of his mouth was bleeding.

He didn’t flinch.

Mom looked at him through her tears.

“Beckett Santoro, my daughter loved you for eighteen years. And this is how you repay her?”

“For Tessa, for the daughter we gave away, you destroyed Katerina.”

“Do you have any idea how much pain she was in this past year? Do you know she hurt so badly at night she couldn’t sleep? Do you know what it felt like to hear her say, ‘Mom, I’m just so tired’?”

Her voice grew louder with every word until she was nearly screaming.

“You don’t know. All you saw was Tessa. All you cared about was whether she could get into Harvard.”

“What about my daughter? Was she nothing to you?”

Dad went to her and tried to hold her back.

“Stop…”

“Why should I stop?” Mom wrenched her arm from his grasp. “You knew. You knew from the very beginning.”

“Our names were on that consent form. We agreed to it. We helped push our daughter to this.”

After she finished, she sank to the floor, wrapping her arms around herself and shaking uncontrollably.

Dad stood beside her, his head bowed, tears falling steadily.

He didn’t argue.

Because everything she said was true.

They weren’t bystanders.

They were accomplices.
