Nate turned to Eden,

“She’s my sister. So what?”

“That doesn’t give you the right to kick her breakfast, steal her stuff, or lock her in a room.”

Eden had nothing to say.

Then the stage screen lit up.

The tech crew had pulled the backstage footage.

On screen, Evan shoved me into the prop room.

Eden locked the door herself.

An hour later, I was banging on the door, calling for help.

Eden stood outside and said to Evan, “Don’t bother with her.”

“Let her think about whether she deserves to compete with me.”

The words came through the auditorium speakers—clear and loud.

The video ended. Eden didn’t apologize.

She ran to the control booth and yanked out the screen cable.

The screen went black.

But a few hundred eyes in the room had already seen everything.

She held the cable in her hand, her tears coming on cue,

“I was just so angry.”

“I’ve liked Nate for three years, and she flaunted it in my face every day.”

“I didn’t know she was allergic.”

Evan stepped up to defend her, “The lock was my idea.”

“Eden was just provoked by Zoe.”

I tilted my head at him, “She held the lock. You hold the blame. Nice division of labor.”

Someone laughed in the audience.

Evan’s face went red. “Stop with your sarcasm. If you hadn’t hidden the fact that you’re siblings, Eden wouldn’t have misunderstood.”

A few people nodded along.

Apparently, you’re supposed to wear a family tree on your forehead now.

Nate held up his hand to stop me from speaking,

“She doesn’t owe anyone an explanation.”

“And she never said she liked me. That was all your story.”

A quiet voice objected, “But she brought you breakfast every day.”

Nate’s face was blank, “Mom told her to.”

“Then why did she wash your jersey?”

“Mom told her to.”

“She even went into your room at night.”

“Mom told her to.”

I gave a silent thumbs-up.

Mom wasn’t here, but she was carrying every single bag.

Then my mom video-called.

The moment Nate answered, her voice boomed through the auditorium,

“Nate, are you bullying your sister again?”

The whole school went quiet.

She didn’t let him get a word in.

“I asked Zoe to take care of you. Is this how you repay her?”

“She texted me saying she can’t bring you meals anymore.”

“Since when does a school ban sisters from feeding their brothers?”

Nate turned the camera toward me.

She saw my swollen face, dirty clothes, and scratched arms.

She went silent for two seconds.

“Zoe. Who did this?”

I pointed at Eden.

“Your future daughter-in-law.”
