I arrived at the auditorium just as Eden was standing center stage.

White dress. Roses. Pink spotlight.

She looked like she was about to get married.

The big screen cycled through photos of her and Nate.

On closer inspection, eight out of ten had been cropped from group photos.

In one, half of Mrs. Smith’s head was still visible between them.

The host announced excitedly,

“Next, Eden will make a public confession to the person she’s loved for three years!”

The crowd applauded.

Evan spotted me.

He and the student council members rushed over and shoved me onto the stage.

“Since you’re here, finish your apology!”

Eden’s eyes flickered with annoyance.

Then she turned to the audience, her eyes glistening.

“Zoe, I know you can’t let go of Nate.”

“But love isn’t possession.”

“Today, in front of the whole school, you need to know your place.”

The big screen changed.

Breakfast deliveries. The jersey. Entering the Sterling house.

The underwear photo.

Every image made me look like a desperate stalker.

Boos rose from the crowd.

Eden handed me the microphone, “Admit you’ve been harassing Nate.”

“Promise never to enter the Sterling house again.”

“Then I won’t press charges for stealing his card and keys.”

I took the mic, “The debit card is mine. The keys are mine too.”

She sighed, disappointed, “You’re still lying. Fine. Let Nate reject you himself.”

A cheer erupted from the back of the auditorium.

The competition team had returned early.

Nate walked in, still in his team uniform, dragging his suitcase.

He was tall and handsome, standing out in the crowd.

Eden’s eyes lit up.

She ran toward him, her dress flowing.

“Nate! You’re back.”

“You don’t have to worry about Zoe bothering you anymore.”

“I’ve already taken back the debit card and house keys she stole.”

“She also promised she’d stay out of your house and never touch your things again.”

Nate looked past her at the photos on the screen.

Then at me—my swollen eyes, my scratched arms.

His face went cold.

Eden was still listing her achievements, “She even claimed to be your sister.”

“Only she could come up with a lie like that.”

Nate was quiet for three seconds.

Then he said, “It’s not a lie.”

Eden’s smile froze.

Nate took the mic from my hand and looked at Eden coldly.

“Zoe is my sister. Same parents. Same blood.”

“You forced her to cut ties with me. Did you get my parents’ approval for that?”
