The Unwanted Mrs. Whitmore Chapter 08

The Unwanted Mrs. Whitmore Chapter 08

In that huge townhouse, there weren’t actually many things that truly belonged to me.

I only packed a few pieces of clothing and toiletries.

As for the rest, I tossed what I could and gave away the rest.

Soon, everything was cleared out.

While I packed, Callum sat on the sofa and watched me the whole time.

His expression was still grim.

He said, “Lena.”

“Yeah?”

“I only just realized how well you took care of this home.”

There were always lilies he liked in the glass vase beside the coffee table.

No matter how late he came home, the house was clean and quiet, with a faint scent in the air.

Callum had been to his friends’ apartments.

Most of them were so messy he didn’t want to stay.

Vivian’s place always had things left wherever she happened to drop them.

Only the home he shared with Lena had always made him comfortable.

Even though he kept saying he hated her, he had still grown used to coming back here.

He simply hadn’t wanted to admit that this was also a kind of reliance.

I pretended not to see his emotions.

I lowered my head and kept packing.

“If you want to keep it this way, you can hire housekeeping. I’ll tell Helena later and ask her to help you and Vivian look into it.’

He licked his lips and said nothing.

This was the 1st time we had sat together this quietly.

By the time I finished packing everything, it was already after 11:00 at night.

I had wanted to call someone right away and get my things moved out.

Callum stopped me.

“It’s too late. Don’t bother. Tomorrow I’ll arrange a driver to take you to him.”

He insisted, and I didn’t feel like arguing.

After I showered and finished my skincare, I curled up on the sofa and video-called Evan.

It had only been 2 days, but we both missed each other.

I wore earbuds and kept my voice low.

“Evan, I miss you.”

Evan smiled on the other end.

“Then I’ll come pick you up now?”

“Don’t. It’s too late. Tomorrow.”

“You had class all day. Don’t make the trip. We’re leaving together in a few days anyway.”

Evan’s eyes crinkled.

“Okay. Whatever you say.”

He held up his phone.

“This month’s tutoring money came in. I transferred it to you. Did you get it?”

I said, “I got it. Evan, you’re amazing. You earned a lot.”

“It’s all yours. From now on, you manage the family finances. You’re my CFO.”

“Stop it. Who wants to be your CFO?”

I couldn’t help laughing, and my voice softened too.

We said a lot of silly, meaningless things couples say to each other.

After hanging up, I realized Callum had already finished washing up.

He stood in the doorway.

I didn’t know how long he had been watching.

He opened his mouth, as if he wanted to say something.

I cut him off.

“I’m tired. I’m going to sleep.”

Things had already reached this point.

There was no point talking anymore.

That night, I still didn’t sleep well.

In my dreams, I kept returning to our wedding night.

When I opened my eyes, I found Callum standing beside the bed.

I didn’t know how long he had been watching.

Seeing that I was awake, he slowly walked over.

“Lena, I’m only realizing now how beautiful you are.”

Moonlight fell over me, quiet and cold.

Callum couldn’t understand why he had once been so sure Lena was ordinary.

In 5 years of marriage, aside from the wedding night, they had never slept in the same room again.

Now she was lying in bed, and there were marks on her neck left by Evan.

Callum’s chest tightened over and over.

He couldn’t help bending closer.

“Lena, I regret it. Let’s not divorce, okay? We can make this marriage work.”

“That man, I can give him money. He’s working so hard because he wants a better life, isn’t he? I’ll write him a 7-figure check and make him leave you.”

“Lena, you’ve always been good to me. I was the one who didn’t appreciate you before. I’ll chang from now on. You can decide everything at home.”

“Hasn’t Evelyn always wanted you to keep me in line? She was right. Someone like me needs

someone to keep me grounded.”

“Don’t leave. Let’s not divorce. We can make this work, okay?”

By the end, there were actually tears in his eyes.

I looked at him.

“Callum, what exactly hurts right now?”

“Is it because you like me and can’t bear to lose me?”

“Or is it because you suddenly realized that someone you looked down on can still be valued by

someone else?”
