The Unwanted Mrs. Whitmore Chapter 02

The Unwanted Mrs. Whitmore Chapter 02

Callum and I lived in Back Bay, close to his office.

It was a large townhouse, but only 3 bedrooms and 1 living room had really been decorated.

Callum used to love collecting things.

The house was full of collectible figures, game consoles, and all kinds of models.

After I moved in, I bought fresh flowers, throw pillows, and small decorative pieces to place among them, just to make the house feel a little more lived-in.

Callum pushed the door open, carrying the smell of alcohol on him.

Without a word, I set his shoes aside by the door.

It wasn’t because I wanted to serve him.

It was just that Evelyn transferred money into the household account every month, and I always felt uneasy using it.

Keeping the house in order and looking after him made me feel like I had earned my place.

Callum glanced sideways at me, then went into the bathroom.

When he came out, I had already placed soup and toast on the table.

“Your stomach acts up all the time. Eat a little before bed.”

After saying that, I was about to go upstairs.

Then he suddenly called my name.

“Lena.”

“Yeah?”

“Why aren’t you angry?”

His tone was calm, as if he were asking about the weather.

I thought about it and said, “Probably because I don’t care.”

I didn’t care.

I didn’t love him anymore.

So whoever he was intimate with had nothing to do with me.

Callum’s eyes narrowed slightly.

He opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something.

In the end, he said nothing.

I went back to my room, changed into pajamas, lay down in bed, and opened my banking app.

The balance was high enough to make my chest loosen.

Even if I spent it carelessly, it would take a long time to run out.

After shutting the app with relief, I received another message from my mother, Denise.

“Your brother is graduating high school soon and getting ready for his driver’s test. Once he picks the car, buy him a Maserati. He likes the way it drives, so get the money ready.”

I pressed my lips together and asked her, “How’s the renovation on the house going? Buy better tile, flooring, and fixtures.”

She refused.

“Why make it that nice? We need to save that money for your brother’s wedding and the down payment on his house.”

“What about you 2 when you get old? How are you supposed to live in a house that isn’t fixed properly?”

“After everything we’ve done for you, this is how you talk to me? You’re rich now. Helping your family is the least you can do. We raised you. We gave you everything we could. Now it’s your turn to take care of us.”

Then she started listing, one by one, the pitifully few things they had ever done for me.

I had originally wanted to tell her that I was preparing to divorce Callum.

But after hearing that, I still couldn’t say it.

Forget it.

There was no point in inviting more trouble.

From beginning to end, they didn’t care whether I was happy anyway.

That night, I slept very peacefully.

But somewhere between sleep and waking, I kept feeling as if someone was watching me.

The feeling was vague.

It didn’t seem quite real.

The next morning, when I got up, Callum was home for once.

He was wearing pajamas, with faint shadows under his eyes.

When I saw him, I left a sleep mask on the table for him.

“Aren’t you leaving for your business trip?”

He looked at me.

“I’ll go with you to Whitmore Estate first.”

Oh.

So he wanted to keep an eye on me while I talked about the divorce.

I smiled to myself and said nothing.
